Laptop as monitor

I know there was a way to use a laptop screen as video monitor for a video camera. But I never tried it or read comments from anyone who had.

This was several years ago, and in the meantime I have been using a Philips 10" portable DVD for doing so. But I wonder if there are new ways to do so.

In my case I want to monitor my Sony Z1 camera.

Any suggestions?

Capturing might be a nice thing too. Problem is I think those files could be only edited in Premiere, and I use Avid MC. Isn't that so?

I need to use CS4, instead of CS5 or CS6, because my laptop can only handle 32-bit OS.

Do you know if I can have a full-screen just for video monitoring?

I checked and you can undock the screen and make it full screen. As for the 32 bit how old is your laptop? I am running a dell e6400 with windows 7 64bit and CS 5.5. As for the files, they seem to be regular AVI files. I would have to double check the settings when I have time but the files I create I can watch in windows media player without bringing them into premiere so I imagine they would import into most anything.

My laptop is a Toshiba A215-S4817. I think it's 4 years old, but it might be less. I can't recall when we bought it, and it's my wife who uses it.

The main limitation for not going 64-bit with it is memory capacity, which is just 2Gb. I'm considering going for 4Gb if I can find it, but in this case I don't quite see the reason for.

I'm using 64-bit Windows 7 on my desktop, because I needed it for Avid Media Composer. But I haven't seen any advantages on other programs. I do miss Windows XP for all my other applications. I'd go back to it in a blink if I could.

About the files, can you put an HD or HDV file in avi format? In this case I'm using an HDV Sony Z1, which is why I need a firewire interface instead of an HDMI.

I made a primary search on HDV files format, and m2t seems to be the norm. Will I be able to use that format with OnLocation CS4?
