Lapel Sticky's on the cheap

Hi all

About a half year ago, I was rushed to the hospital for something that ended up NOT being serious. After the results came through, I laid there waiting for the nurse to come and remove the little EKG pads. Relieved my situation was a false alarm, I started thinking about the shoot I was just on and the difficulties I was having with wiring up this particular talent. They did not have much beyond a Bikini style tank top on. (and yes, she was fully cothed from the waist down, so lets leave that alone)

Getting the mic to stay in place was a problem I did not want to have to put allot of effort into, with respect to my opposing gender. I'm sure many of you have been here so we will leave it at that.

It was then, I realized all those pads they use to monitor me with, were the perfect Sticky for my Tram Mics. I asked the Doc if I could have a small sheet of new ones to take home, and he gave me some.

These are perfect!! I cut them up into smaller pieces and attached the Vampire clip by sticking it into the front (non sticky side) of the electro pad. With a little practice, you can get it so the pins stay in between the front and rear without poking through.

You can then stick these right on the Talent's skin under clothing. Males may get a little frustrated if you are not courteous to their chest hair cause it pulls on them when taking them off. But, it sure beats the commercial versions some of the mic manufacturers sell. You can buy them in small quantities on line.
There will be more than enough in even the smallest packs sold, to last you through tens of dozens of interviews. Especially if you cut them up into smaller sizes.

A Half year later, I use them all the time. My sound guy thinks they are fantastic, He loves em!!

Highly recommended.

I should not have to tell you NOT to re-use them, thats rather gross. Cheapness has its ethical limits....

Is there a Brand Name of some kind?

Most of mine say 3M. Go to Ebay or something like that and type in EKG Electrodes. Almost of them have a silver snap or button tab in the center, you may have to cut around it. Personally, I leave it on, mount the mic next to it, and and use the protruding button tab as a Stand Off to keep the clothing from rubbing on the mic. It is a little taller than the mic and works well for me.

Its hard to explain without a picture. I will try to take some and post them when I get my little camera back.

There are other devices that use electrodes too, you may want to look around. The thicker the better. Most of mine are about an 8th of an inch thick.

Good luck and PM me if need be.

I think Tram or Lectrosonics essentially make these for this particular use. My audio engineer said it is essentially made from the same stuff. The manufactured one's have little add-on windscreen packs to wrap around the mic. All in all, they are quite expensive and these do the same job for the most part. These may be a little stickier though. I have not tried sticking them on clothing yet. The goo is rather, umm, well, Gooey. I dont know if it would stay on the clothing or even stain it. I will give them a try.

The Rycote Stickies are basically the same thing - designed for mics. - and still very cheap.

Yes, that is essentially what I was getting at. I just could not remember the manufacturer's name. Thank you.

It boils down to this:

You can get about 1000 electrodes for around 30 bucks. Some come in 4x4 flesh colored patches, and larger. I have found use for those as well.

Rycote's come in ten packs and come out to around a buck each (last time I checked)

Rycote has a complete system including little Furries for the mic for twice the price per unit, and is probably a little more easy to use because that is what they are designed for respectively.

Depends on if you are a "DIY person"
or a "Time is Money" person.

I like choices
