Going with lavs would put the mic closer to the talent than a shotgun on the camera and in some ways would certainly be better. But when you use lavs you give talent the power to move, break, and turn-off the mic at will, plus you will tend to hear clothing rustle if they move. I agree that a boom op is generally the way to go whenever you can.
There's almost always a compromise between money and sound quality and different tools are better for different jobs, so can you describe what you are doing sound for? How many people? What kind of locations?
And what budget are you looking at?
Last year I did a good morning america video of our mustang club president and the club outside in front of the Biltmore Estate and the on-board mic was not close enough to get good vocal from the prez.
So I am thinking that if I had a lapel mic I would get good audio from him and not have to be so close. I needed the wide shot due to this enormous home.
I really dont like the idea of a hand held because I dont want him looking like a news reporter.
