Lag issue w/ music video cutting

I'm running a powermac G5, 5 gigs of ram, tera bit harddrive, with FCP 5.1.4 and it's lagging. I am cutting a music video with 26 layers of video and 2 layers of audio(studio track). Everything is synched, but when I make a cut it takes about 20 seconds for the program to actually make the cut. That's 20 seconds of the wheel of death, then it makes the cut. Is this supposed to happen with this much video? I have cut 17 layers without a problem before. Is there anything I can do to get it to run faster?

thanks

you have 26 layers of video coming off of one hard drive? yeah, you'll need faster storage, like 2-3 in RAID0 or 4+ in RAID5.

It's on the c-drive and I have tons of space to spare on the drive. What if I go through and start making more and more cut, getting rid of the video I don't like, will that speed things up a little bit? I am kinda a noob what does this mean?

"c-drive" - are you talking about your boot drive? Never put media on the same drive as the OS, no matter how much space there is.

are you working with DV footage? a single hard drive will only play back a handful or streams at a time. 26 is not going to happen (drive isn't fast enough).

Yeah that's a way overwhelmed machine. I'd just cut one track the way you want it in terms of sync, then carefully bring in all the layers realizing there's no way they are all going to play at anything like realtime. I have a 8-core MacPro with a RAID and I wouldn't expect anything over 6 layers to play back with sync.

Dude I've syched 17 and my machine still plays the 26 without dropping a frame, I am just complaining that the cuts take too long to form. You place the play head where you want the cut, press control v and it takes 20 seconds to cut all the layers. It all still plays fine, and I have already syched all those layers, I'm just cutting it now. And the song is under 2 minutes (punk/harcore song) so I'm not that worried.

I'm am definitrly looking into another good sized hard drive, what would you guys suggest.

thanks

It's not the size it's the speed. I'd go for eSATA. Also upgrading RAM and processor. Waiting 20 seconds for every cut is really a drag.

I'm just not gonna shoot so many takes next video I shoot. It's a minute and a half punk song so the band was down for hella takes, but next time I just keep it to 16 or so. The machine can handle that musch fine. I just finished a video of 17 layer and it was 3.5 minutes, and there was no lag at all.

I'll definitely look into upgrading.
