Re: LaCie Unveils DVD Burner With LightScribe

I looked at some demo discs not long ago (being in Charlotte, Verbatim is literally 1 mile from home). They look pretty cool, but 1) they’re monochrome and 2) they take a long time to burn – up to 40 minutes for a full-quality picture. Their manager of DVD marketing was careful to point out that the more radial the design is, the less time it will take – so if you have words circling around the center, at lowest quality, that can take not much longer than a few minutes. But straight text can take 20 minutes or more and a simple 1mm line – a straight line, nothing more – running from the center to the edge of the disc takes more than 30 minutes.

He said it’s intended to replace a Sharpie, but other options, like inkjet-printing, shouldn’t feel threatened by this.

He also said that many, if not all, new HP PCs should ship with a Lightscribe-enabled drive installed.
