LaCie Thunderbolt drive and Compressor 4

Has anyone tried out Compressor 4 and determined if the Thunderbolt drives will provide a significant export time improvement?

On a new iMac 27" (3.4 ghz i7, 12 GB ram) I've tested FCP X using the built-in QT export and found no real difference in performance between the LaCie LBD 2 TB and my old LaCie d2 Quadra FW800 drive.

Here is a link to the thread page with my test results:

Having a faster drive will not make Compressor work any faster. You are limited by ram and processor speed.

Depends where the bottle neck in your system is..

Good point. The benchmarks I ran seem to prove that in the observed system (new iMac 27, 3.4 i7, 12gb ram) storage was not the bottleneck when using either FW800 or Thunderbolt. My guess is that USB2 is not either. I received confirmation from my tech buddies that operations such as rendering and compression are CPU/Memory intensive and not storage intensive. The "read" operation seems to use no more than 30mbs and the "write" operation 1-3mbs occasional writes. Those are well within reach of most any good drive...perhaps the caching is a main player.

I'll install an additional 4gb of ram (from current 12gb to 16gb max) when Fry's has another sale.
