anyone use LACIE external HARD DRIVE?

I've just bought additional ones, and this new one started making this high pitch noise. Is that bad? i'm sure it is. It only happened when I was compressing videos or scrubbing or playing the video off the drive- uh, practically, everytime I use it. sometimes really bad, sometimes less.... have I got a bad one? anyone got ideas?

Re: LACIE HARD DRIVES

Hard drives spin, sometimes very fast, so it's possible it would make some noise. You have another one of the same model that is silent?

Re: LACIE HARD DRIVES

Howdy,

I currently use a LaCie Extreme 250GB. Prior to this I had older 70 & 80GB LaCie drives. Every drive I've had has been quiet running, so I too agree a high pitched noise is cause for concern. Sometimes bad fans can give off a high pitch, so hopefully it is something as simple as that.

Go to Lacie.com and email or give their tech support a call. I had one of their drives crash a few years ago and their tech support was quick to respond and very helpful.

Sorry I can't help more, but at least this is a starting point.

Re: LACIE HARD DRIVES

I'm running three 1TB lacie drives and two 500gig lacies along side it. No problems for me.

Re: LACIE HARD DRIVES

lacie drives are the best money can buy. i have one, and it is very loud, and does make the noise you describe. never had a problem for over a year.

Re: LACIE HARD DRIVES

yes. it hasn't given me any problems. but it just shrieks.. and i feel like I'm at the dentist.... just got worried. but if it stays reliable then im worry free too. thanks for you replies.

Re: LACIE HARD DRIVES

mine is loud sometimes when im shooting and on a laptop, so i actually have a box with a cord hole cut out. i stick it in there (its just about as big as the drive itself, found a real small box at the local pharmacy) and i dont hear a lot of noise.

If that is what makes a the "best" drive. I'll pass. My MDD Mac's fans are noisy enough. I've got custom, OWC fanless enclosures with 250GB Cudas blazin.

Re: LACIE HARD DRIVES

What makes LaCie better than the rest? I'm happy with my seagates. Very very quiet. Cant even tell they're running. They just bumped up the warrantees to 5 years too  ;D

Re: LACIE HARD DRIVES

i dont know if your hdd can do this, but i dropped my lacie drive 5 feet onto concrete from a table and a laptop on a shoot. it was on, and kept capturing. it was a beautiful sight.
