Lacie 1tb, opinions $220

My experience tells me to stay away from those LaCie drives. I just returned one that died mid-shoot. (Thankfully it didn't cost me any footage.)

Personally, if you need max. capacity, I'd go with G-Raid drives, or some kind of eSATA RAID setup (like Firmtek or Caldigit).

One thing to keep in mind with drives like the one you're looking at… In most cases they're two drives striped together to make one larger drive. And if one of the two drives fails, your life will take a very ugly turn.

LaCie makes great drives. I have several and I've never had any problems.

I'd be a little wary of that price though. Lacie sells it for $379 and Amazon and other retailers offer it for a little less....Not that much cheaper though. $220 seems a little fishy to me.

EDIT

Just noticed it's refurbished. That makes more sense. I personally would never buy a refurbished hard drive, but that's just me.

Find reviews for that specific drive.

maxtors are somewhat evil too but the 300Gb's seem ok and generally had good customer reviews, whereas I had a 1.5 terrabyte Maxtor that crashed beyond repair and then I found tons of reviews saying that their 1.5 TB drive crashed, they got a new one from maxtor, that one died, got a new one, died, gave up ... that was pretty much my experience too.

That model of HDD is excellent. I have a few and never had a problem. However, the one that is being advertised is refurbished. I would stay as far as possible from HDD that are refurbished.
