Labels on DVDs

Anybody had any problems with glossy labels on DVDs (applied with a CD Stomper)? I burned several DVDs, all of them seemed to work OK, but as soon as I placed the glossy CD labels on them, there is digital garbage when played via a settop DVD player, and then skips several minutes ahead. I use Maxell 2x DVD-Rs, usually they are pretty good. Any insights would be appreciated?

Re: Labels on DVDs

Unfortunatly, not only do labels throw the DVD's off centered, when heated it will eventualy peal off and jam the player. I used to work at dupe house and we couldn't put labels on DVD's anymore for these very reasons. Printing directly on them is the only solution.

Re: Labels on DVDs

I do not suggest using 'labels' for the exact reasons listed above.

I would look into having them silkscreened. It's not as expensive as you might think.

1 to 4 colors
do the art yourself
the cost will be in the sceens burned for each color used. If you can deal with no more than 2, it shouldnt be too bad.

Tell them to keep the screens/art on file for future use.

Well FLintstone... I have had the same problem with Maxell and Memorex DVD's... Some turn out great some do not. but for th most part they dont.
I have had to use some no name version Roco or something.
I know what you mean though... The video digitizes at some points and others it will freeze and just wont play anymore.

Re: Labels on DVDs

I used to have problems too with the labels, no matter how straight they look, they always throw off the disk and player. I switched to printing right on them and BAM!! Problem fixed.

Re: Labels on DVDs

you can also get an awesome thing called a bravo or primera unit that burns your DVD, and a little arm takes it out and puts it into a special printer that prints right on the disc. Since its robotic you can just stack 50 blank DVD's into its tray and push a button and it burns them and prints them while you are sleeping or whatever.

Pretty cool and you can get em for about 900 bucks on Ebay sometimes. Might sound like lots but if you are a videographer or whatever and do client projects (i.e weddings) you can charge almost that for 100 DVD's and it should pay for itself with one job.

Ouf! And I thought I was going insane! I am "glad" to see that this is actually a known issue. Thank you all for sharing your thoughts. I will get myself some good printable DVDs, and an Epson 960; as it turns out, I need a new printer.

In the future though, I plan on getting a Bravo duplicator. But gotta start small.

Re: Labels on DVDs

I knew of this issue, not through DVX related experience, but through some ghetto DVD that was given to my wife from a wedding. When playing it in the DVD player, it just skipped and skipped. One can hear the sound of the label rubbing against the inside.

Sure enough, it had some ridiculous label on it.

Re: Labels on DVDs

I use the Condutor Pro printer and it holds about 50 disks for printing. I find the silver coated printable disks look better than the white ones but the ink gets finger prints faster.
