labeling lenses

Tape and a sharpie works.

I use a brother label maker for most of mine.

I don't label the rear caps, unnecessary.

Pssshhhhhht, I only label the rear caps...

You must be an absolute joy to AC for! I'm always trying to keep ACs in mind when labeling and organizing gear.

I personally like my equipment to be labelled and neat. I find it makes explaining what you want to assistants a lot easier and they are more capable of getting the right item you asked for if it's clearly labelled. I have a mate who is the exact opposite, he is very unorganised and messy. When I have assisted him in the past, you usually spend more time looking for the right tool then you actually spend using it. He is notorious for having equipment buried at the bottom of a bag labelled for another type of item. It can be so frustrating trying to find something and on more then one ocassion I've found items thought lost on a production weeks or months later in one of his messy bags.

Call me OCD if you want, but at least I know exactly where all my gear is and that if I give an assistant directions to grab something that they should be able to find it fast and efficiently because everything is correctly labelled.

Personally, I think labelling your gear is a very good thing. I think it helps you and your crew, to work fast and efficient. It also, helps you to organize and keep track of your gear.

I label everything - even the label machine has a label which says "label machine".

... and if you look close at that "label machine" label, there is a little label on it that says "label machine label"

It's not just fast getting to it on set, it also means that assistants will put everything back where it belongs. I designed my cases so that I could open them up and know almost instantly if everything was there. Never lost anything that way.
