Labeling Clips Correctly?

I have had problems in the past with clips be labeled wrong or there were too many letters. Does anyone know what carators FCP does not support and just how many letters a clip can have without FCP having troubles with them. This was also a problem copying from one harddrive to another..
Thanks

The longest clip label I've used is 44 characters (including spaces). That's not normal for me, but in this case, I felt I needed a lot of description. I try not to use special characters. I'm pretty sure it doesn't like '&' either.

A scheme that has served me well is something like: Scene 121 Owens CU_3 R10
where _3 is take 3 and R10 let's me know that the original clip is on tape #10. I capture on an external HD (Quickcapture) so it's important for me to know which tape the take is on in case I ever need to access it, since I'm not doing the log and capture thing.
