LA area temp lodging for one?

I'm looking for lodging (six months to a year) in the LA area, a studio apt., apt. to share, or just a room for one. I'm on the east coast, so I can't physically check places out. I'm looking on craigslist, but thought some of you might know of bare-bones inexpensive places or other internet boards where I can find something that is not a rip-off, crack den, or roach motel. Something in the 'burbs is fine. Any suggestions?
 
There's usually openings in my apartment complex. The best part about this place is the price. It's not paradise, but it's doable.

Are you looking to get a place in 6 months to a year (as in not looking right now, but will be looking later on) or are you looking for a place now and plan on staying there for 6 months to a year?

Check out the Royal Equestrian, in Burbank. Good location, studio apartments, when I lived there it was reasonably priced; not sure about now.
