L.A. Power Outages

Now, I'm not one to panic, but c'mon....what's with the timing on THIS one?!

I was sitting in my office as the power went out. Decided to take lunch and stroll down the street. Power out as far as I could see in both directions.

Then met a friend and drove from Studio City, until we found power. Made it to Burbank. Ordered lunch, then the power went out there too. Minutes later my mobile phone rings, as I get the call, power just went out in Downtown L.A. - Then another call - Glendale's out too. WTF? Burbank and Glendale are on their own power grid separate from LADWP...

Then the people around us start talking about Sunday's threat on LA, the date, then the sirens are heard outside.

Not to get too caught up in the moment, but I was having a Shaun of the Dead experience thinking all hell was breaking loose around me and I was oblivious to it.

So. Panic over. Back at work. Nice A/C and internet again. Makes you wonder. We take way too much for granted, eh?

i was in burbank..hearing all the people freak out...waiting for the ground to shake, and giant metalic objects with 3 tenticle legs to pop out of the ground and start zaping people with its death ray...

was interesting seeing all the people from all the buildings on the disney lot wondering the streets and alleys of the lot, like zombies....with their head to cell phones all saying the same thing..."do you have power?"

it did have that "waiting for the other shoe to drop" feeling, eh?

guess this is the looking-over-our-shoulder-wake-up-world we live in now.

i dont think people would have reacted as much if it werent for the timing (calender-wise) - just a bad coincidence.

LA's sense of its own inevitable doom is only surpassed by its capacity to fulfill that dire prediction through special effects. Vanity, oh vanity!

Note to LA,

Nobody cares. Well, I don't anyway.

I'm just giving you guys a ration of friendly ****.

I just left LAX yesterday and was more than a little nervous when I saw the international terminal (at Quantas and United) totally shut down with cops running around everywhere. It had something to do with Timmy, The LA al Queda Operative and his threats against the two great Satans: LA and... uh, Melbourne ...yeah.

Of course, the missus had been good enough (thanks, honey!) to book us passage to San Francisco on 9/11, so I was already dealing with all those things in the back of my mind.

I'm glad all my homies and the good people of LA are okay today.

"Hey Chuck."

"Yeah?"

"You wan't me to dig here?"

"Yeah."

"How deep?"

"About 8 feet."

"What about wires?"

"She'll be right."

"Okay."

.......

<BRRRREAK>

"Hey Chuck?"

"Yeah?"

"How come the McDonalds sign just went out?"

"Dunno, keep digging....."

I think people should wait for something to happen in October. But what's really the point in stressing about the whole thing. Just have a plan on how to get out of town, where to go and what you want to bring with you. I got my list: PowerBook, DVX, 20D, G5 and maybe the cats if they were good just hours before the **** hits the fan. All I need to do is get some portable solar panels to charge stuff with an I'll be good.

I just don't understand the "reason" they gave as being that "A" (as in one) cable was cut by a utility worker. So you mean to tell me the majority of metro LA is relying on ONE cable? Even if this is correct, what kind of horrible infrastructure is this? I don't even live there but it peeved me because my webhost is out there and my server and email was down for hours today.

Ha! My wife called me from her office today in Westwood. Same deal; freaked out about the previous day's threat. Not to mention she's on the 23rd floor.
