Where I live in Houston doesn't offer many workshops for filmmaker. I have decided that I'm willing to fly to L.A to attends workshops or seminar to improve my skill and knowledge. Any learning resources in L.A that you guys would recommend? like a rental house that offer regular seminar.

UCLA Extension Institute has excellent classes. You may also check Columbia College Hollywood. There are also classes affiliated with the NAB convention in Vegas in April. The Rockport Institute in Maine also has highly recommended classes.

Before you do all that have you looked into books or dvds or online courses (like ripple training or lynda.com) that cater to the areas youre looking to improve in? What ARE you looking to improve in?

Currently I'm trying to learn location audio. For Lighting I'm trying to learn how the placement/angle of light can create different effects and the technicality of using lighting instrument correctly and safely.

It's your money/time to spend how you'd like, but there are good books (and probably video series/web tutorials) on all those things. In addition, I know HCC has a film program of some sort, and might have classes catering to those specific areas. I only have experience with books, but for lighting Matters of Light and Depth by Ross Lowell (same guy who started the light company) is a good one that helped me break through some roadblocks. You should be a little careful with books because though light is light and the physics don't change and in that sense the wisdom is timeless, some of the older books talk about techniques and units that are a little outdated at this point, in my opinion (when's the last time you saw a Mole ziplight on set?).

Jay Rose has a very detailed book about production audio you could check out too (don't know name offhand, go to amazon and search for Jay Rose's name). There is a DVD series put out by Kodak or some other company, I believe, that has input from famous cinematographers on how they do what they do. Masters of Light or something? Someone help me out here.

Thanks Josh, I'll be sure to check out that book by some author ;)

Jay Rose books (bottom 2) was a little dense. So I bought the 3 books on top instead. Already read through them and reading Location Sound Bible right now (not shown in picture).
