I applied to about 10 different smaller prod cos in LA for a summer internship back in Feb. I havent heard a thing from any of them and ive called them all twice (Always got someones machine) Ugg. I have a good resume with a lot of experience for a college junior, but im not getting any bites. Does anyone have any ideas as to where I could apply?

You'll get 10 nos fro every yes right now so chances are if ya hit up 10 more places, you'll get a bite.
Just go through the local production quide and keep cold calling.
Good luck, man. This is the tuff part.

Every city has a production guide. LA may be a bit different only because it is where the industry lives. however here in Florida we have a production guide in all the major cities so that when a film or production company wants to shoot anything they can go there and see who they can hire for production, lights, camera, etc.. Find the guide for the area that want to work in and then get yourself listed as a PA, But more importanly get the names of all the productioncompanies and starts you mailing and phone campaign. If you get them on line you could probably dump the info into excel and that will make mail merging your resumes easier. I knwo the state of flrida also has one for the whole state. look into that for ca. Again its going to be a bit different just because of the sheer size of the list. Hope this helps

A few thoughts...

Go to convention/seminar type things to meet people. Ex: I went to UCLA and the school held
networking events with the industry. I met a few people that helped me later.

Try to track down people/companies you'd like to work for and attend seminars they give. Like UCLA extension has (or did at point anyway) a weekly forum where you could go and hear sitcom writers talk. If you wanted to work on a sitcom, you could go up to the guy afterwords and talk to him and possibly give him a resume. There are seminars in other areas as well.

Check out craig's list/mandy.com/entertainmentcareers.net etc.

Also - the UTA joblist. This is put out by United Artists Agency every month and has a long list of available assistant type jobs including internships. To get this you would need to know someone who has some contact to someone at UTA. Like an asst somewhere.

Go to your college's career center and see if A) they have any internship contacts in the biz - which they probably do if they're any kind of school or B) they have a list of alumni that you can contact for information. Sometimes just getting an informational interview can lead to some other gig.

Try some of the bigger companies. My experience has been the larger companies have the organization to have an internship program. Some of the smaller companies don't take the time to deal with that.

Contact production companies that produce things you like - ex: a show or a film or something, and then contact them - talk about how much you like their work and want to work with them. I got an internship on HBO's Mr. Show just by calling up for tickets and asking about internships. I happened to know the guy who was interning the year before and so they brought me in and I got it. That job lead to my other job at Malcolm in the middle which I've had for over 4 years.

You could also email companies first before calling. Might get better responses. Just ask if you can talk to someone about it, and if so, who is that person.

Lastly, emphasize how YOU can help THEM. Not about what you'd get out of it, but what you could offer them.
