A wide-field telephoto has a special tele centric design that yields a greater depth of field for a given aperture compared to a standard optical design. You have to be very careful about spherical aberration in the design of such a lens, but the greater depth of field is equal to about a full stop compared to that of more traditional design. The advantage is that you get the compression effect of the telephoto design without the severely shortened depth of field.
