kodak masterclass lighting setups

I am really baffled by the amount of light the DPs use in the Kodak master class DVDs. I just got done watching "Lighting Dead Poets Society" and the DP has 2 5ks lighting a background and then 5 5ks lighting a 6 foot by 12 foot dorm room CU shot. Does this seem like excess to anyone? I havent worked with film yet but that seems like over kill for the shot.

It's pretty common to flood those sets on the big budgets. So yes, it seems like overkill, but it doesn't at all seem uncommon. The concepts can be scaled down and work fine in a lot of settings. I can't remember what aperture he went with, but it was probably super low ASA and he wanted deep focus for the whole thing. And the more big lights you have the easier they are to control, since none of the stray light from the rest of the studio or anything like that will show up too much.

probably shooting at a normal stop of +/- T4... At 100 or 250 asa-iso. All normal... Just not the sad trendy low budge f1.4 on a 320iso camera. If those numbers are an example that would mean he'd need 4.5 stops of more light on average. That's over 16x the amount of light... At the least. Yikes!
