Know Very Little About Microphones & Sound, Anyone Help?

Hi all, right now we have been shooting a movie out up on the moors, granted we still have a number of different locations to shoot at. including a mix of indoor and outdoor locations. Now the cameras we have are both Canon HV20s. We bought some microphone without really knowing anything at all about it. And it barely picked up any sound, but it was incredibly cheap, so ti expect thats why. Now basically if anybody could introduce me to the basics of what sort of microphone i would need and what would be the best way to capture onto my PC to edit with, i would be extremly grateful! Apologies if i come across abit of a newb with this.

No worries, there. Many folks have asked those same questions, so you can find a lot of useful information in the forum stikies.

Mic secection is only the beginning, though. Microphone placement and boom technique play critical roles, and an experienced opperator will often have a greater impact on the sound than most other factors.
