Kit vs. individual

Hello everyone. I just joined this group, although I've been reading all the posts for quite a while!

My question is...is it smarter and cheaper to buy a 35mm adapter as a kit, or purchase everything separately in the hopes to save some cash? And is it even possible to put different stuff together? For example, a 35mm adapter, with a different set of rails, with a different follow focus, with a different matte box.

Thanks folks!!

The great thing about adapters is that you can make your rig however you want. All the top retailers of 35mm products have a standard size for all their products. You can really mix and match anything.

Thanks. I was hoping to hear this, although I'm not really sure if it is cheaper to get everything individually. And even if a kit is more expensive, it may be worth the extra cost for not having to make sure everything fits together.

just don't interchange the adapter components such as diffusers or flip modules.. those aren't interchangable.

Thank you for the information. I really like, and am getting ideas from, the discussion with pictures of people's rigs. Awesome!!

well it usually is cheaper, buy used. Go to the marketplace and look right now for stuff. Recently there has been a Letus for 700$ zacuto rails for 300$, follow focus for 200$, monitor for 400$. Try to pay the same brand new.

The thing with camera gear is that people will generally treat it better since it is expensive. So buying used is not an issue. A lot of my gear is used and I have never had any problems.
