Kit under 1500

I've only lit a couple interviews over the past couple years and I've suddenly got a bunch on my plate over the next couple months - mostly offsite.

One was with a Lowell Tungsten kit we used in college - and one was with Kino Flo Divas. I like the Divas - but can't afford two. I like the Lowell kit - but can't handle the heat. I recently purchased a really cheap Bescor Led kit that got all kinds of good reviews on BandH - man do they suck - impossible to color balance.

What I'd like to do is maybe get one really nice key+softbox and then a cheaper fill/hair. Suggestions needed.

Anyone have any thoughts on Impact Octacool-9?

Aputure Amaran 672 LED's in Daylight seem to get good reviews. They are sold in kits via amazon with one spotted and two flooded lights plus batteries and a case. These are the light's i'm going to invest in next - for portability.

for affordable kino-like lights, I'd go the flolight route. I've got 3 4-bank flolights (220 AW) in daylight color. they cost me exactly 1.5K in total i believe. rugged and well built. some say better built than the original kino's.

My current portable interview kit consists of two Aputure Amaran 672's, one spot and one flood, plus an Aputure LightStorm LS-1S spot, all in the daylight models. I use a couple of Matthews RoadRags kits for diffusion, bounce and flags. All of these, plus a few stands, clamps and sandbags you will have to add, would be a little over your $1500 budget, but you could get back under that price by substituting either the smaller Aputure LS-1/2 or another Amaran for the full size LightStorm. It's a good, versatile setup, the individual lights are all very compact, and run cool and silent. The whole rig can run on batteries if needed, and a single remote control can dim all the lights on separate channels. The two spots are even powerful enough to use for fill outdoors.

Hmm, I don't know if I can do LED at the moment. Thanks for the flolight rec - I didn't know those were available. Looking at reviews now.

I also do some photography so am wondering if this Westcott 2-Pack Spiderlite TD6 kit could do nice portable interview lighting.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't like lights using CFL like the spiderlites and similar for location work. It would be different if they were setup and left in the studio.

Does your $1500 budget include stands, stingers, diffusion and the like, or just for lighting instruments?

Purchasing used can go a long way to extend your budget.
