[TD="class: alt1, bgcolor: #EEEEED"]Hello guys,
New to the forum so hello.

I wasn't sure where to post this, but seeing as this is the support gear section maybe i will get a better response here.

I am located in the UK and work in the music industry producing and remixing. I have edited a few basic promotional videos using Final Cut, which i know pretty well so i am looking to take those music promo videos to the next level with lots of studying, reading and learning.

So... I have a Canon 7D Body to build a system around... I will be shooting close up shots with vocalists, city walkabouts, time lapse scenes and 60fps slow motion work and i would like to achieve a film look to these videos. We also have access to a photography Studio for inside work too.

I know it is the operator skills rather than the gear, but we want to buy good quality entry gear on a small budget so we don't want to make a mistake of buying the wrong gear for what we want to achieve.

So we are looking for quality entry gear such as... LED night light, lighting and accessories, green screen, tripod, lenses, CF Card spec and anything else you would suggest as an essential.

Looks like a great forum here! Thanks.

Budget?

I have a Caon 3Ti, basically the same as the 7D. I just pre-ordered the Canon 4Ti with the 18-135 mm and the 40mm. That should be a great plus for video, with a whole new focus and auto focus system. Plus silent lenses for video with autofocus and tracking. That might be your first step. I usually use L glass, but those lenses are special and will be a core componenet. Should ship by the end of June. early July. $1,400 for all 3.

Beyond that I have 7 Canon L lenses, plus 3 non-L primes.

The 24-70 L is my main bread and butter lens. Older version is $1,000 used. Newer is $2,300 new. Just out. Great lens.

Then the 70-200 2.8 L II IS. $2,000 new. I also have the older 70-200 4.0 non-IS L, about $500 used.

Canon 85mm 1.2 L is a great lens. Canon 85 mm 1.8 is a good lens.

17-40 L 4 is sometimes needed on a crop body,, at around $600 used? An upgrade is the 16-35mm 2.8

There is also a Tamron 11-16 mm that many like, I don't have it.

Plus prime lenses - 24mm, 28mm, 50mm, 85mm I mentioned, older in the $200-$300 range, newer in the $800 range on teh 24 & 28.

I have 3 stabilization systems. A Zacuto Target Shooter run-and-gun, $300 used. A Redrock shoulder mount $700 used/$1,200 new (Cinema Field). And a Sony Monopod and vest system with clips to the monopod that I really like, $250 used/$750 new:

For sound, I have a Marantz 661 recorder, $650 new/$425 used. Or you can get a Zoom H4N for $270 after rebate new, less used.

For a tripod, the Monfrotto 504HVD head or similar with some sticks, $600 new, $300 used.

For SD cards, I have 8GB, 32GB, and 64GB Sandisk Extreme or Ultra 30Mbs Class 10 cards. The 32GB were selling for $25 each recently on sale, get 4 of those or 6 or 8 and you are all set. The higher speed cards aren't necessary fopr teh camera you have, and they will be much cheaper by the time you need them.

I have to run for now, more later. I know that is a LOT! Can you afford $4,000 total? That will get you a good kit. If not, let us know the budget. I have $10,000 just in lenses I think, but that includes esoteric stuff like the 45 mm and 90 mm Tilt/Shifts, etc.

Have fun!
Michael

Hey Michael,
Thanks for the reply.

Budget is very, very small £1000 ($1700?)... The 7D is not included in this budget.

I am looking for either new or used gear and atm only the essentials in this budget... Other items that may be needed i can add in time.

This will basically be a hobby to start with... Making Music Videos for various releases from myself and music friends release... Nothing TV quality, mainly for youtube/facebook promotion.

What would you suggest to buy first on this small budget to get us going...

For a small budget, I'd buy some good old manual Nikon lenses. The 50mm 1.4, and 85mm 1.4 (or the cheaper, but still nice 85mm 1.8) are a good start. Then find yourself a nice wide angle lens, or a decent zoom with a wide end. As said prior the 24-70 is very nice...I tested that and the Sigma 24-70 2.8. While the Canon L blows it away for photos, for video there was very little difference and the Sigma is generally half the price of the Canon.

You''re never going to get all that you need on a budget of 1k...But you can get all of the above lenses used for about that price.

Thanks,
