Kit bag..

Hey

I was just trying to make a list of all the bits and bobs I think we are going to need when we start shooting a film next week and was wondering what are those essential tools that you think belong in a kit bag (besides the camera ::) ).

Re: Kit bag..

Basic set of tools (I don't know how they are called, but nothing fancy), Gaffer tape, wire (to tie stuff up) a stapler (those that also spit nails), scissors, a knife (those to cut paper), a swiss army knife, A voltage meter, Gloves, Colored tape, More gaffer, Foamcore (black and white), sun blocking lotion, a hat, waterproof timberlands, a maglite, and the assortment of other stuff you find useful.

Re: Kit bag..

More clothespins (c-47's) than you will ever think you could need, bottled water and granola bars/energy bars. A cel phone (turned to vibrate) to call people to bring the stuff you forgot. If you are shooting outdoors, I have found it helpful to have a big tarp to diffuse sunlight (unless you have really big butterflies).

Re: Kit bag..

if you have anything that takes batteries, bring more batteries than you think you will need.

if you have anything that takes light bulbs " "

if you have anything that takes dv tapes " "

maybe i'm paranoid but for any tripod i have i get a spare qr plate and keep it in my main camera bag just in case i misplace the primary one!

masking tape and sharpies, very handy.

a leatherman tool and i always keep one of those stubby screwdrivers that has both flat and phillips bits.

if you are doing lighting there are some really handy bits that help you mount lights in places other than just light stands, bogen makes all sorts of clamps and putty knives with the traditional 5/8th spud, plus they sell just the spud with a threaded hole so you can make your own gadgets to hold lights.

and i'd like to repeat the suggestion of an energy bar, another great thing for energy is glucose tablets from the drugstore. my wife is always pushing those because there small and last a long time in storage.

Tarps are great, if you can try and find the ones with a normal side and a silver side, makes a sweet reflector. small saftey chains always come in handy, pens, markers, grease pencils, some black cloth, slate, Velcro (sticky kind), and a dispoable raincoat (which has made me a many a friend).

Re: Kit bag..

i can't believe i forgot...MOVING BLANKETS!

uhaul stores sell nice new ones.

best thing you can do when shooting indoors, put down the moving blanket where your going to be staging your crap you need to shoot.

makes the owner of the location VERY happy!

i always make sure to tell them i'm going to do it before they have a chance to ask.

Re: Kit bag..

Good point. I always think of them to deaden sound. But I guess you could actually use them as they were originally intended. What a novel idea.

Re: Kit bag..

Go to full service industrial hand truck supply house and ask for BLACK furni pads, or perhaps dark grey. It took some looking but I found them years ago. Most furni pads are bright blue and can cast color onto your subject.

Re: Kit bag..

i try to make a real effort to not only thank people where i shoot but make extra efforts to be welcomed back!

imagine if you (or more likely) one of your friends makes a mess, leaves behind food wrappers, spent gaffers tape, shrink wrap from panasonic dv tapes etc.

then you really NEED to get back in there to shoot something over again, or something you forgot, but all the person remembers is the mess they had to clean up.

Re: Kit bag..

The correct response is---"Shoot, a fellah could have a pretty good weekend in Vegas with all that stuff."
