I just saw this at the Japan Society tonight. It's a great little movie. Imagine an Agatha Christie thriller but with an absurd Japanese sense of humor. It focuses on a bunch of people who meet on an internet forum and have a get together. The movie is a real testament to doing more with less. Most of the film takes place in just one room but the great script, blocking and camera work keep the film compelling and visually interesting through out.
Watching Kisaragi made me realize something: a mystery is only as strong as its characters. If you don't care about them, then you really aren't going to care about what's going to happen or what happened. This movie worked for me because it's characters were so strong and likable. Even in places where I think the pacing hiccupped a little bit, the movie was still enjoyable because the dialogue and acting was so good.
There's going to be another showing this Sunday. I highly recommend checking it out.
