KinoFlo setup question

I'm heading to Japan this week and will be bringing 2 x 4 bank kino's for their portablity and weight. We've used them in the past but have got mixed results. Either the scene is flat or bright. can anyone here share some tips for using kino's for the key and fill and how to accomplish a good shot with this setup?

Re: KinoFlo setup question

I split up my 4 banks by buying wire and adding 20ft to each lamp.

I built individual reflectors out of foil and plastic. Works great. Before I had tooo much light in one spot.

Re: KinoFlo setup question

How far from the talent is ideal to place the Kino's? Do they have to be right up on the person like the example of Walter Graff's website where he used a 8 or 18 watt floruo tube to light the talent? I haven't used Kino's before so could I place them about the same distance as I would a Fresnel or Tungsten light or do they need to be closer to the talent or object?

Re: KinoFlo setup question

The closer they are, the brighter they are and the softer the light is. The further they are, the dimmer, and the harder the light (although it'll still be way softer than a fresnel or especially an open-face).

So, the answer to your question is: they should be the proper distance away to give you the look you want.
