Kinoflo Mini-Flo's

Has anyone used them? What's your opinion about these fixtures for in-scene accents? Are there low cost workarounds?

I've used them once or twice. They are very specialty - lighting inserts, car interiors, etc. I often find I don't have enough units if anything.

I prefer Litepanels for car interiors - I like the output better and they're easier to rig up into nooks and crannies off camera.

Definitely agree. I just bought a Daylight Flood unit and have been using it for everything.

Mini-Flos are great little lights I love the way they look on screen but can be a little messy at time with all the cables when you are trying to be very discrete.
For my money Litepanels are a better buy. They are much easier to hide (no wires) you can mount them on your camera and they run off battery power.

But alas you didn't ask about Litepanels you asked about Mini-Flos.
So I will say this, over the years I have used them at least a couple of times on almost all the narrative films I have DP'd and have been very happy with them. I will continue to use them in the future I'm sure.
As far as low cost workarounds I'm not sure what you mean; are you asking if anyone knows of a cheap DIY or if you are asking if there is a different way to light a scene.
If it's the latter all I'm going to say is there is a thousand ways to skin a cat.
