Kino Flo alternative

Hi, doing a feature and the DOP informs me we need some 2K Kino lights for lighting daylight interior shots. Wasn't expecting the additional cost of that, so I was wondering what the alternatives were please? It's a 3 week sheet and i'm also thinking I could be better off purchasing an alternative than spending £500 odd on hire. I get the feeling I could probably spend the same on an alternative? I have thought to use 2K blondes with a gel but not sure if that's quite the same. Help!

Thanks

If the DP just wants a nice soft large source just bounce your 2k's off of white foam core. A large bounced source is about as soft as it gets. CTO/ND the windows to match. You could gel your lights instead but the light loss with CTB vs CTO is considerable. And you'll probably be wanting to knock down the light from the windows anyways with some ND in addition to the loss from the CTO.

Purchase wise Richard at coollights sells some decent flourescent kino-like fixtures that may be suited well for you as well. Not quite sure what you are looking to buy.

PM or email Richard, I would imagine that he could give you a quote for int'l shipping. Another dirt cheap option but much less elegant would be to just build your own. Get a few 4 ft flourescent workshop fixtures from the hardware store (the kind that have cords and usually hang from chains). I've used those with some decent success. I just bolted a nail on baby plate to them and you can rig them like any normal light. I use them occasionally for throwing some ambient light down from above. They're bulky and heavy though. Each cost about $40 (US) to make.

Hi Shacke,

Kinos are cool, but they dont do 2k strenght ones...

We used a realy nice softbox lamp once, and if you stick some blue film over the lamp it would probably do ok.

Alternativly, a 2k with some cc film and lots of diff film will provide the same kind of light. You can always bounce it as Jeff said.

Your 2k blondies should be fine. Used one last week for something very similar. Large diffusion frame in front, with full CTB for daylight balance.
