Kino and Arri

What's the advantages of Arri lights versus Kino Flo? It seems like owning and maintaining Kino Flo lights are much cheaper than Arri lights. Can I just buy Kino Flo tubes from a hardware store or do I have to order from Kino or with Kino Flow brand?

Arri fresnels are hard, controllable light that can be made soft with diffusion or a softbox. Kino Flos are strictly soft light. The question is, do you need the option of hard light?

I see. Okay so, can I use the florescent tubes for the Kino Flos from any hardware store or does it has to be Kino Flo brand?

Nope. You need to use Kino Flo bulbs. They are specifically designed for their ballasts and are color balanced for video.

The big question is what are you shooting? There is no one perfect light. Every light gives you a certain look. I own fresnels, pars, fluorescents, LED, and many others.

If you're budget is limited, I'd go with a fresnel and a softbox. That way you have the option of either soft or hard light.

Kits are great, but they are expensive. I would look on ebay, craigslist, Pyramid Films, etc. to find some used gear. Usually lights like Arri and Mole Richardson will be fine when purchased used.

Example: I just picked up an Arri Kit with 2 1Ks and 2 650s with stands off of a local producer for $800. If you would buy that on B&H it would be over $2500.

But before you do any of that. Get some training from forums and videos. Then you'll learn when you'll need each kind of light. Plus there is a lot more to lighting than just the fixtures. Having a good assortment of flags, diffusers, barndoors, scrims, nets, cookies, etc. will go along way. It's not just having the light, but also controlling it.

Thanks for the help. I'm checking out your videos on YouTube...very informational! Would this be a good buy?

Glad to help!

IMO, that kit is a decent buy. I wouldn't put it as a "great deal". With the softbox and other accessories it's a not a bad buy. If it was under $2k than I'd be more enthusiastic about it. You could probably Buy-it-now with Bing Cashback and get $180 back which would be a better buy.

Honestly, if you're not in a hurry, I'd keep hunting until you find a better deal. If you tried hard enough, you could probably get most of that stuff for under $1800.

Thanks again. I'll look for a kit that are around $1800 to $2000 as a starter kit.
