I started watching this last night; am about 45 minutes into it and so far I love it. This is a really cool film. Cant believe this flopped. Interesting colors going on; oversaturated, underexposed and a tinti of green (like my Zombie stuff).
I loved the cinematography! Am I going crazy when I mention the continual use of what seems to be a higher than normal shutter speed? Not just action sequences here. I'm just curious because the snow is so crisp and 3D (and it isn't CG either I know for sure).
This movie looked F**king great! But like Troy, IMO that's all... Shock & Awe but no substance. Still fun to watch. And ever since the BMW flicks I have been hoping Owen gets some big roles so this is also a good thing.
It's to my understanding the Fuqua (director) had to compromise a great deal of the film due to the studio wanting a PG-13 rating. I have not seen the film, so I cannot comment on does the DVD version mirror the theater released version. Sucks when the boss (Studio) alters your vision of art, due to "hey we will make more money if we take out some of the good stuff to let the little teenagers in with a PG-13 rating".
I have the Directors CUt and havent yet seen anything terribly off a PG-13. There has been some 'graphic' violence' not just ordinary sword play, but a head being chopped off, blood splurting as an arrow hammers a dude in the back. I suppose the head will get you the R though
Ok, I finally watched this movie last night. Beautiful cinematography, weak story, poor history. Kiera is an absolute robo-babe. Wow.
Sorry, weak story kills it for me. Hey, I'm all about more 'sword and sandal' movies, but this movie just looked like someone said, 'Let's do another Gladiator movie, cause they are making money right now.'
I'm also quite annoyed, now that I think about it, with the general movement to deconstruct myth and magic with some rational explanation. This is a whole big topic to discuss, so I might take that to the Cafe.
Anyway, although I found the movie interesting from a camera operator's viewpoint, the story was muddy, and Arthur is in my opinion an unsympathetic character. I never really 'got' his motivation, or that of his men.
