Killing the viri.

I have 22 virus files logged on my computer. The earliest one started the day I began to have the problem where I could no longer open any folders, My Computer, My Document, Control Panel, or any other Windows window. I have them in the "Virus Vault", but I cant delete them. I delete them, and they re-appear. And they some of them dont have legible locations ( C:\System Volume Information ... Which is not a folder...) And the rest are under C:\WINDOWS\system32 , a folder I once tinkered with and almost killed the computer in the process. How do I kill em?

BTW, I use AVG Free.

EDIT- Now I have 25 of em.

They probably heve entries in the registry and the startup. Unless you know what you are doing there in the registry not a real good idea to mess with it. I have manually cleaned viruses off several times. These things tend to hide to where when you boot it will re-install. Check your program files directory also. Arange the directory so it shows most recent at the top. Make a note of the ones at the top. Delete like you did before, then boot and check your program files dir again. Any new entries should be at the top (as they might re-install). Check out on the net and if they are virus delete them. (I am assuming you are using XP). If you have a recover disk that might be your best bet. Also try running Ad-Aware to get rid of spywares.

OF COURSE IF YOU CHOOSE TO DO THIS YOU DO IT AT YOUR OWN RISK. I KNOW WHAT TO LOOK FOR ON MINE AND CAN RE-INSTALL FROM BACKUP DISKS IF NEEDED.

Yea, Im usually really careful. They probably do comeback when it boots up, the only thing is I deleted them all from the antivirus program, and I did a virus scan after it. The second the scan finished it (it didnt catch anything) the computer restarted... but not abruptly... it logged me off, then did the Windows is restarting page, and then rebooted. Then they all appeared again.
I tried HijackThis but was a little skeptical.

I currently run about 10 spyware blockers.

AH! Delete all but one. Sometimes they could cause conflicts and start to kill each other off. Try deleting all your anti virus programmes except for 1. Alternatively delete all your anti virus programmes and download the trial for a professional one such as nod32 or kaspersky. They will do a better job than AVG free. Alternatively you could try purging your computer by reformatting your hard disk. That'll get rid of them for good but it'll be quite tough

OK- All I have now for spyware is SpyBot and Ad-Aware. Only antivirus is AVG. Im probably going to go buy that one antivirus with the two hands on the cover of the box (Norton?). I still cant seem to fix it though. And I am still clueless about the un-real path C:\System Volume Information... Ah, I hate computers.

ok... like the above said. you are going to have to screw around in the registry. Probably what you need to do is do a google search for the name of each one. Then right down any file names you can find that may be related to each one.
Then you will have to go to your reg edit, and search for each of those lines that you found in the google search for each and every "virus". If you're lucky you will get them all and that should take care of your problem. But since there are so many on your computater' you're going to find that quite difficult. You'll probably have to do it several times until you start narrowing it down and finding what you may be missing. It will probably take forever. And everytime you screw up and miss just one line, that virus will completely regenerate itself again. But maybe you can get a few and that will help you to be able to operate your comp. better so you can try other stuff.
Search for the first one, delete, search for the next instance of the same, delete, until you get that line, then go to the next one. Also, do a partial search or a search for a part of it that will stand out in your registry. Often times you may find similar instances of the line you are looking for, and that will help you find those extra entries you may be missing.
Try that forever, and when you get sick of trying to find everything, then just re-format :) start fresh

There is also a program called gipo or something. it is a basic free download that allows you to delete stuff that you can't normally delete, for whatever reason. It works by running before windows has a chance to load any of that crap and lets you delete it, etc. Don't know if that will be useful in this instance though

Ill try Gipo. Im willing to try anything at this point. And ill do all the googling to see if they are vital files or virus.

Good luck. I don't know that gipo will help you in this instance in that it will likely not do anything about your registry, which is the root of the problem. Worth a shot though.

good luck. reformat :)

if it was me i'd reformat rather than disk accidentally deleting vital files..

On that topic..i wonder what happens if you accidentally delete the code for delete? Is that possible? I think its a paradox

Any success pto?

oh, and by the way, I think the fact that you're running so many spyware blocking programs and crap like that could be part of your problem. I don't like most of that crap.
I don't use any of that, and (knock on wood) I have only ever had one problem with viruses. A jack that made my google be yahoo. it was only one line in the win.ini file or something though so it was easy.
Hope I didn't jinx myself there.
Anyways, just wondering if you were having any luck

No luck. Ive eliminated the spyware blockers (which I am growing with in skepticism- everytime I got a new one, it would detect 12-15 spywares that the others couldnt detect.)

Now my even bigger problem is that the files under the WINDOSWS\system32 that are deemed viri, are not even there... something that worsens my problems. I think I am going to go buy a system back up thing (Ive seen them at Best Buy) and I'll back it up, and then safely screw around, and wander into the more dangerous zones.

ok. But, if you back up your system are you going to be backing up the viri as well :) hmmmm.

Sounds like its time to reformat, unless you just want to tinker around and learn some stuff.

I know, but atleast if I mess up my comp, Ill have it back to the way I had it.

But, if I reformat, I will lose everything I have, and will no longer have any of my pics, footage, files, and word documents- it almost not worth it. I could try to backup all my files that I know dont have viri, but that would take years.
