Killer camera rigs

Looking to buy a copy of 2nd edition. Anyone used it to build any rigs? A good read is it? Thanks.

Josie

I've got the first edition. You can probably find all the plans somewhere online, but man is it nice to have all those photos in a spiral-bound book. I'm glad I bought it, even though I still haven't made the big-honkin' crane.

Ordered mine online last week and it shipped Monday.

Looks like it's not a book anymore, though.

Dan's gone .pdf for anyone who orders from here on out.

Looking forward to getting mine soon and buildin' some stuff.

Yeah, I noticed that it now only in e-book form, which means that if you want the pages in front of you while you work, you have to print it all out, which adds another 30 or so dollars to the price......still looking though....trying to borrow one and see what it's all about.....hell, I am still working on my home made softbox!

I 've used it to build several rigs.

Namely the:

Dark Passage Dolly
Shock Corridor Camera Stablizer
Big Combo Crane
Third Man Tripod
Steel Trap Spreader
They Drive by Night Car Mount
Killer's Kiss Crane
and the Sandbags

I used the Stabilizer for a long time but ended up buildling a fig rig that worked just as well. We use the Crane all the time but have yet to put the rotating head on it, however the static head works great. Looking to build the big Carnival Crane soon for our new feature length. You wouldn't believe how many filmmakers in town have seen our crane and asked where we purchased it.

Where can i order this book? what rig would help lessen the tiredness of shoulder shooting all day? ive seen the easyrig it looks like it may do that are there plans in the book on how to make one?

Been away for a few days......got three major pieces of equipment built.....

I almost went with the angle iron/skateboard wheel design because of the inability to find any good inline wheels AT ALL. And I live in a MAJOR port city....go figure. I ruminated about all the hubbub here and elsewhere about buying the most expensive bearings and wheels and and the "if you dont your dolly will suck" crap and found some great inline wheels at target. 72mm wheels with abec 7 bearings for 39 bucks. They roll smooth as glass. So I went with the DARK PASSAGE DOLLY, and am very very pleased with the result. I was, however, mad as a wet hornet when I followed someones BRILLIANT advice and sprayed Pledge on the track to "make it smooth"....GRRRRRRR! All it did was squeeeeeeek! So I put some powder on the track and that shut it up.....

I also built 5 of the "THE HARDER THEY FALL SANDBAGS" with 5 more coming up.....awesome.......and easy as hell to make.

And also, even though it isnt in the book, I built my own china ball that can be broken down into two pieces and tucked away in a very SMALL package......so I've been very busy needless to say. I will post some pics and all when I get a chance. And if you are an avid DIY'er like me, get the book....it's awesome.

Wow, a China ball? I definitely want to see that. And you have more skill than I with a needle and thread if you made five of those sandbags.

Pledge? Really? Hadn't heard that one -- and apparently that's a good thing.

zach72, do you have any pix of your rigs? Thx

Sure, I had our photographer out shooting scenes from our feature length movie, The Box and he posted our photos on his site. You can view some of our creations from Killer Camera Rigs on there. It is in slideshow format but you fastforward to the slides listed below.

Photos of Killer Camera Rigs in User

Respectively,
Slide 3: Shows the Big Combo Crane, Third Man Tripod and Steel Trap Spreader
Slide 12: My version of the FigRig (not in Killer Camera Rigs)
Slide 26: Slate/Clapper (we use a piece of paper sandwiched between some board and plexiglass so we could always clean it)
Slide 32: Car Mount from Killer Camera Rigs( I ended up using glass suction cups mounted to a handle with the toggle buttons on it) we strapped the camera using bungee to the mount and strapped the mount to the truck for added safety to the camera.

I have other pictures of the glidecam but will have to post them and the sandbags later.

Wow those are some impressive rigs, may have to get this book. Zach - can you give a rough estimate of time and cost that goes into building these rigs you have?

Sure thing. I'll look into cost of supplies and about how long it took me for each item in the next post.
