Kids today with Energy Drink craze

I have noticed a growing number of kids today consuming energry drinks like its no big deal. And I mean kids as young as 8. When I worked at Shell service station not long ago a mother came in with her kids (one was about 8) and she said to them 'go choose a drink' and then they came up to the counter with what they had chosen. I mentioned to the mother that the drink her son had chosen was a high strength energy drink containing 160mg of caffiene!!!! She seemed perplexed at first but stil llet him have the drink.

Isnt that quite irresponsible? I mean, I tried one of those drinks once and had a rapid heart rate and breathlessness and it was quite scary for someone who is in good health. How does that mother know her son isnt gonna experience the same thing and even end up in hospital?

I see al lthe teens drinking all these fancy new 'designer' energy drinks and knocking about 5 back before they go out, I have witnessed my 18 year old sister do this with her mates.

Seriously, there should be a restriction of the drinks, an age limit. I beleive they can be dangerous to sensitive individuals, and especially children who shouldnt even be putting that garbage in their system.

Just my 2 cents.

I am probably the worst guy to say anything......LOL. If I have a gig, I usually buy 2 of them. One for on the way in, and one for the mid-shoot crash.

But yeah, these should NOT be for kids. The mental image of that kid bouncing around in the back seat like a pinball, talking a mile a minute, makes me glad I am single with no kids.

LOL. I too am guilty of consuming about 4 cans of 160mg energry drinks in one shift when I was working a crazy week doing two jobs. I woke up at some point in the night struggling for breath, panting like hell, my heart going like a death metal drummer's drumming, and alot of confusion. I think my brain was gasping for oxygen. My partner thought I was dying lol. Took a while to to get back to reality.

I'm just especially worried about kids taking the stuff. I would never drink another energy drink again, because no matter what it catches up with me and screws me over.

I have no reaction whatsoever to an energy drink. We went on a class trip once and had a whole stack of Red Bull and I drank like 6 cans in an evening and nothing. The other guys were tripping like crazy...

Now, If they would keep me going, then id buy a can for some working days, but they do nothing, so its just a waste of money.

But I know what you mean. here in england, I think you cant buy a Relentless energy drink under 16 or something like that.

Maybe parents should just pay more attention and make informed decisions. Legislation isn't the answer. I don't want peanuts to be illegal because some people react negatively to them any more than an energy drink should be regulated. People just need to rely on more than an advertisement to consider themselves informed.

Proper diet and exercise is the only way to health and stamina .... but we all know that .... we are just immature.

It just seems to me that an energy drink should not be legally for sale for people under 16. Half these kids dont even know what they are putting in their body.

Would you be ok with your child consuming 160g of caffiene???

Really? I never knew that. I'm from England but been living in NZ for last 4 years. I dont think theres a law here at all.

I tried a drink called Nos and it had something like 200g of cafeine.

Its not the caffiene that's the problem. Kids consume anything sugary - its more like the million other ingredients in them that's the issue.

Is it just me or do most of them just smell like chemicals?

I just stick to caffiene pills for really long shoots. At least I know what's in it.

I <3 Monster Energy. I will have 2 on a day when I need to be moving all day. I am legitimately addicted to caffeine though, I will feel awful if I don't have one for over 24 hrs.

Yeah, a cup of good coffee has about 120g caffeine (at least here in Germany - US coffee may be different) so it´s not such a big deal.
Two cups could blow every can of "power drink" out of the water - caffeine wise.
But as you say, sugar and every sort of chemicals are the problem.

No, I'd not be ok with my child consuming that much caffeine. Which is why I don't let them. It's not the governments job to tell me or my children what they can and can't eat or drink, it's my job. That was Snazzy Flapper's point.

Err....could people note the difference between mg (Milligrams) and g (Grams)

I think 120g caffeine would seriously discommode a bull (Even a red one!)!

I'm saying why on earth would a child need to consume that much caffeine??? For an adult, fine, we work, we get tired, our bodies/organs are fully developed, we have the right to make that decision.

and davesswan, sorry, I mean mg not g.

Bad for the heart and liver, period. Parents should pay more attention (and I say that as a parent myself).

Funny story though... I worked an event in Zurich three years ago and Red Bull was one of the sponsors (and at the time RB was also banned in France). We had traveled from Paris with a bunch of our friends and during the event the energy was flowing... at the end of the event anything left was given away. I saw our French friends run back to our hotels, steal pillow cases and blankets and come back to load up on RB... they looked like Santa with sacks full of energy lol...
