Keying out green in FCP6 help

Here is my issue:

I shot on a small, really bad drop down green screen and lit the screen with only (2) 650 arri tungsten fresnel lights and lit the subject using only (1) 1K arri openfaced fresnel with chimera attached.

The end result being that I dont have any backlight ON the actual subject to separate from the green when keying out using FCP6. Im using the blue and green screen filter in FC and I cant get rid of the green bleed onto the subject no matter how i blend. There is alot of movement from the subject as well so whenever I feather the edges, the movement causes loss of the subject.

Does anyone have some tips or tricks for keying out the green without loosing subject quality?

much thanks to anyone for the help.

There are some better keying options in Motion.

Do you have After Effects? Shake?????

I have after effects 7, but no Shake. I havent ever keyed anything in After effects though. Someone told me that there are some other blending filters that you can add to the green screen filter to help out as well. does that make sense to you?

Thanks Blaine. Ill try that out.

On that tip, whats the best way to move projects between FCP and AE without loosing quality? I havent figured that out yet and thats why I typically choose to figure out methods within the STUDIO.

Very simple... you can export FILE-EXPORT-QT MOVIE - CURRENT SETTINGS and make it a reference movie (non-selfcontained).

Then do what you must in AE and render it out exact same format.

OR...

Get Automatic Duck. If you plan on doing lots of AE work with FCP this is a must (though it's also not cheap!).

Keylight in AE is very powerful... I've got some good tutorials on getting a really tight matte too when you get that far. I really like AE for things like this.

Oh dude... thanks for that info!!!

Im gonna finish the edit and try that technique out on monday. would you mind if I got back to you for help on monday/tuesday if needed?

you could also use color and go in and play with the greens to make them more uniform/push them away from your subject, then bring it back to fcp and key it.

I'll be here.

So I got the key figured out, and it looks pretty good but...

How do I bring in a layer from FCP to AE where the blacks are transparent. I have 3 diffferent layers... 1 is the background layer, the other 2 are the layers that I need to key out the green screen using AE Keylight. when I bring them into AE as quicktime movies, all the frames that are black (as in areas that I have cropped out or that there is no video) are on top of my background layer so that I can not see it?

someone told me that I should export those layers as an alpha channel? but I cant figure out how to do that and I dont really get it.

anything you can help me with on this one?

Thanks

Must they come out of FCP??? Can you go back to the original and crop in AE? Much better tools there for that.

Anyway -- if you must...

1st... you have to trash your render files. You can't send something that has been rendered.

(or move it into a seperate sequence)

Anyway --

The key is to use the Animation Codec millions of colors + ... have to have the +... that's the alpha channel.

Good luck,

CaptM
