Keyframing the Trim Value in FCPX

Okay, this is really excruciating and makes me not even want to bother with this "app".

I'm finding it almost impossible to keyframe a simple left trim on a video clip. I want to trim it so that the underlying clip is exposed.

Usually, for a really quick edit like this, I just use a mask in FCP but... can't find that VERY simple item in FCPX.

I'm really familiar with keyframe animation, it's baffling me to all heck and back why this very very simple task will not work.

Am I doing something wrong?

1. Set keyframe
2. move one second ahead.
3. Adjust Left Trim parameter

Nothing happens.

You want the crop tool, I think. Open up the inspector for the clip and it's there towards the bottom.

Otherwise you could get a third party plugin that will do masks. Or export a mask from Motion (won't be able to adjust the control points though).

So it's like the left edge is moving on the top clip to reveal the clip underneath? As said above, that's the crop tool and it's key framable no problem.

There is also an 'effect' called crop and feather that you can mess with the feather of the crop, but also add rounded corners etc. Again, all key frameable.

If you need more complex masking (and this technique doesn't require masking, just keyframe the crop parameters), check into Slice X from CoreMelt.
