keeping gnats and insects away from lens?

Anyone have any suggestions for keeping gnats or flying insects away from the lens while shooting? I realize DEET is bad for the lens/camera (plastic) so I'm hoping to a better option.

thanks, jeff

Oh, bug repellents have gone way beyond DEET. Look at REI, Amazon, Walmart, or your local outdoor supplies store, etc. Here is one possibility that doesn't involve putting anything on the lens and supposedly works really well: https://www.thermacell.com/

Also look into the various mosquito repellent bracelets available at those stores I mentioned. Finally, be aware that there are now a couple of other substances that can be used in lotions that are about as effective as DEET but have different properties (better smell, don't melt plastics, etc). Picaridin being one of them.
