I've just mentioned this book in a screenwriting context over on that forum, but I have to mention it over here as well since, well, it's Kazan on Directing. I can't recommend this one enough. It's a collection of Kazan's personal notebooks, journals, and reflection on both his plays and films. Everything he did, from his own perspective. You're in the head of one of the greatest directors of stage and screen as he breaks down the story and analyzes the characters of classics like On the Waterfront, A Streetcar Named Desire, Death of a Salesman, A Face in the Crowd, and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. He's humble and self-aware enough (and self-deprecating) to know when he failed, at least by his own standards, and its especially insightful to see how and why he believes he failed in his direction of a particular piece.
Just get it. Check your local library first; I found it at my local community college. Find out more at Amazon.
