Katrina Evacuee Survives. Will Finish Zombie Film.

Jack,

Like all the others in the world, I have been watching on TV and reading in the papers about the unspeakable things that have happened to so many.

I don't know you, other than by your posts here, but I just wanted to let you know that as I sat here today in California and read your posts about your plight it hit me that you were the first person that I have had any "contact" with who was a victim of the storm (not to mention a victim of the "leaders" inaction's.)

As I read of your plight and your upbeat tone I actually got some tears in my eyes because I got some small sliver of what you and others must be going through even though I've seen all the video and pictures. Your little story humanized it for me in a way that watching it on TV can't.

I hope all works out as best it can for you. Liked your list also.

Thanks Moonwind.
I'd like to see that footage. I hope you're place is standing? We know our building is there and in good shape less broken glass, water damage, and looting. I hope to get back as soon as its safely liveable and get worl rebuilding the city and document as much of that as I can.

The place is still standing, there is just a little less of it now. We had over 40" of water in the house (split-level), so the entire downstairs sections are now gutted as much as possible (dry wall, insulation, paneling, carpet, etc.) and we are living in one room upstairs where it stayed dry. We hope to get out again in a few days and document more of our area (the red-headed stepchild of Katrina, you know, the one who gets hidden when company comes  ) including the beach area.

I'm so glad to know that your place is still standing and hopefully unlooted - the Quarters were being fairly well guarded since most of the media was staying there. Between the two of us we might have some pretty good footage!

We are not back up on our cable internet yet and are using dialup on our laptop (with intermittent success since we are still having phone outages), so I haven't been able to keep up with the board as much as possible, but I did hear today that NOLA mayor may allow Algiers residents back in tomorrow. I have a very good friend that lives in Algiers that I haven't been able to locate yet - hopefully I'll be in touch with her over the next few days!

So, on to the remodeling effort over here! Maybe we will redo the downstairs in purple, green and gold!

Its funny what will finally hit someone in a situation like this. One of the reasons for my upbeat tone is that it still hasn't hit me fully yet. I'm hoping to just swallow it, never deal with it, push it down deep somewhere and use it to fuel the mental health industry to the tune of $100 an hour for the next 30 or 40 years. (humor = defense mechanism). Sorry I didn't respond to post right away, but I was in Zombie hell, and starting a new temporary job as a teacher's aid (gag) in the Dallas area.
But I wanted to say thanks man, that's really open and touching. If more people communicated like that we'd have a lot less problems in the world. Your thoughts really do mean a lot to me.

Sorry to hear you had flooding, but glad its fixable. Hopefully your insurance won't screw you.

I must admit I feel a little guilty, I think my GF and I were perhaps the luckiest people in the whole disaster. Mentioned before that we lived in the highest part of the Quarters, which as you know is the highest part of the city. I talked to my zombie actor lead (who didn't get out til Thursday after the hurricane) for the first time on the phone the other day and he said that A: the flood didn't get much past Rampart (block from our apt) and he expects our place is totally dry. He also said that our place looked totally looting free and he didn't even see any hurricane damage. So there might be some shingles gone and if there's any water damage it won't be worse than when the downstairs sink burst and the landlord had to replace the carpet -- well okay that's going to smell like ass after a month unchecked -- but probably no big deal.

I'm most stressed about putting my life back together there. I was basically freelance/independent contractor/adjunct everything so I lost all my jobs, and don't know which institutions/agents/support structure will be back in shape to support my 10 - 20 hours of real work a week so I can pursue my creative whims else while lifestyle. What a stupid thing to mourn when so many have lost so much more. But I feel like pursuing those things was who I was, and with the GF, beagle/cats apt in quarter, I was really happy, and not just in retrospect. I knew it at the time.

I finished my zombie film. I’m really proud of it. I think the Texas / New Orleans stuff matches OK. It’s about all I have left of the life I made there (non domestically speaking). My film, the contest, and Barry_S have been a balm. I just wish I could go home now, though.

…sorry for the downer. I’ll be funny again next time.
