K-Zep vs. Windpac

I'm looking for a zeppelin system, and I've narrowed the choices down to 2: the K-Zep and the Windpac. If any body has experience with both, please tell us if there's any difference in sound quality.

The main advantage of the K-Zep is of course the price. The advantages of the Windpac is that it's collapsible, and they say they've tested it to 85mph wind. I won't be using it in a hurricane, but I will be using it at the beach, where winds can reach up to ~30mph. Can the K-Zep handle that?

Also, any advice on booming techniques in strong wind? (I will be using AT4073 mic).

you have basically picked the least and most expensive options there!

the k-zep is great, will prob handle as much wind as the windpac. its heavier though, and maybe a touch less transparent.

the windpac is collapsible, but its shock mount isnt! and its a big shockmount so its a bit of a pointless thing really. i have a friend with one and she says its very transparent, but she doesnt trust it in very high winds - goes back to her rycote.

I was excited about the Windpac when it came out a couple years ago but since hearing non-stop "meh" reviews of it I decided to just stay with my traditional zep.

Unless you an excess of cash I would skip the Windpac. I haven't heard any reports of how the Ktek performs is super high winds but all the zeppelins have a limit. Anyone with a Ktek test it out under high wind conditions?

A 12x12' placed in front of the wind can slow some of it down but can be noisy itself if not secuded well. The human body will also block wind well. Bringing the mic in from below can help. Experiment and get creative.

Cheers

k zep is easily as effective as a rycote. they are more or less indentical in terms of application and results, but the k zep is quite a bit heavier.

nice blimp. i have one (the only one in South Africa) and wont bother with a rycote - no point really. besides, its not very windy here. :)

Thanks for the advice guys. I forgot to consider that the Windpac's mount is not collapsible, so I'd have to carry around some bulk anyway. If the performance of the Windpac, the K-Zep, and the Rycote are all about the same, then it's a no brainer to go with the K-Zep and save some money.

Tim - when you say that the K-Zep is "quite a bit heavier", you're talking about just a few ounces, right?

being non-american the concept of an ounce is foreign to me. I'd say it weighs maybe 1 or 200 grams more.

If memory serves 28+ grams to the oz so that's about 7-8 oz. That is a pretty big difference.

Could you perhaps describe it in terms or their relation to each other? Is KTek 30 percent heavier? Twice as heavy? . . .

oh gosh. im not so good at this. lets just say its heavy enough to notice a slight difference but not enough for me to worry about it. maybe 10% heavier? i think my 200 grams was a bit hectic.
