Apparently Panasonic has had enough of JVC and wants to sell it. It could mean some changes in their professional gear as JVC and Panasonic have collaborated in the past few years on joint research and design. The two companies have also been involved in cross supplying hardware for sale such as the Panasonic AG-DV2500 which is actually a JVC BR-DV3000 in disguise.

Well, it's better than them getting shut down, as was proposed six or nine months ago. Last I heard the rumor was that Kenwood was going to buy them.

Matsushita's wanted to do something about JVC for a while; Matsushita was making money hand over fist in all divisions but losing lots of money in one (JVC). So they talked about either shuttering them, or reorganizing them, or selling them. A later press release said that the reorganizing efforts were working and that the flow of red ink was stemming, so that raised questions of whether Matsushita would try to keep 'em. I guess this article ends that speculation.

Well, maybe this will be good for JVC. Better to go to someone that wants you, right?

Keep in mind though, this is for *all* of JVC, not just the professional video division! We're talking about the whole VHS and DVD-recorder line and consumer camcorders and Everio lines and everything. Professional Broadcast only accounted for something like 8% of JVC's revenues last year; it's a small side business compared to the consumer side.

I'm hoping this might create a flood of accessories for my HD100, but at an affordable price. Ok... so I'm dreaming.
 
Even before I heard rumors of the proposed shutdown, I had hopes of Panasonic actually absorbing the JVC pro division so the industry could have the best of both worlds. JVC has some fantastic engineering and actually produced some very innovative products such as VHS/ SVHS, the very first handheld HD camcorder and the very first shoulder mount 3 chip DV camcorder. JVC pro also has the best website and marketing department of the major hardware makers. If these attributes were combined with Panasonic's quality control (which JVC significantly lacks) and brand recognition, the results could be extemely beneficial to the industry. We will just have to wait and see what happens.
 
JVC has always been amazingly innovative. They invented consumer HD, bringing it to market 18 months before Sony's first HDV camcorder. They invented DVCPRO50, calling it Digital-S (later renamed D-9). I hope wherever they end up, that they can continue to innovate.
 
Well, D-9 is a tape-based format, so while the compression format is identical, it's not truly accurate to say D-9 *is* DVCPRO50. They're identical video and audio data, but stored on different media. Kind of like DVCAM and NTSC DVCPRO; same data but different tape = different format. So I should have been a bit more clear.

I don't think there's a direct comparison for D-5; DVCPRO is D-7 (and I think D-7 includes DVCPRO50); Digital-S is D-9, MPEG-IMX is D-10, HDCAM is D-11, DVCPRO-HD is D-12, and HD-D5 is D-15.
 
I think someone like the owner of Oakley should get together with some investors and buy JVC. Somehow I think that guy knows a thing or 2 about professional video. :)

Just think a 2k/4k video recording deck. That could be the new HDCAM SR recorder.
