JVC HD 250 > ???(media recorder)??? > Vegas

We have a shoot next month with 3 JVC GY HD250s and will be editing in Sony Vegas. I would like to avoid shooting to tape and run either SDI or ieee 1394 to a media recorder. I want to maintain the integrity of the color space (4:2:2 if possible) at 1080 (don't think this camera can do that) or 720P.

We also want to shoot at 24 frames per second.

So this gets me to my question, does anyone have a suggestion as to what would be my best choice in a media recorder to pair up with these cameras and also will record in a format that plays well with Sony Vegas?

So to summarize:

Cameras - JVC GY HD 250
NLE - Sony Vegas
Preferred record format - Minimum of 720/24p
Need media recorder that plays well with both the cameras and Vegas

We will also have two Sony EX3s in the mix so any advice on matching them up with the JVCs would be helpful also.

Thanks in advance for you input

You can buy a hard drive recorder for that camera but the HD record format is M2T only.

It is expensive ($3,000.00 at B&H), but the nanoFlash from Convergent Design is a device to consider. It records from your HD/SDI output to a wide variety of formats. Check with them to ensure compatibility.

Atmos is another company to look at and their models are cheaper than Convergent Design.

As good as the JVC is, the EX3s have 1/2" CCDs and consequently will look better under identical lighting conditions. All you can do is white balance (a lot if you need to) and hope for the best.

Thank you for your reply.

We are looking at a bunch of options right now. The Nano Flash is definitely an option however, the JVC only outputs via SDI 720/60P and we're looking for that 24P look. Why JVC has such limited options for SDI output on that camera is beyond me. The only way you can get 720/24P out of that camera is via firewire or direct to tape. The Nano Flash does not have a firewire input.

Sadly I have to agree with you. I've always found JVC to be slow off the mark in figuring out what the customer really wants and delivering it to them. For example, I used a pair of JVC 550Us at work for a number of years and was very happy with them. When I finally got the OK to upgrade to HD, I got a pair of the new JVC HM-750s as they were inexpensive and, more important to me, real shoulder-mount unlike the Sony EX series. The biggest drawback is that JVC went from 1/2" CCDs on the 550 to 1/3" CCDs on the 750. Needless to say, low light performance does suffer. JVC, what were you thinking :(
Good luck with your search and do let us know what your final solution is.

Mike,

I can already tell you what our solution is. We will simply just shoot to tape. Because of the JVCs inability to output 720/24p via SDI, this creates a problem with the media recorder options we have on hand.

We were trying to avoid capture time (3 cameras X 3 hours shoot)by renting external media recorders as well as maintian the highest quality signal possible. Looks the cost of capture time is less than the rental of the recorders and as I stated above, the options for camera output restrict us.
So, tape it is. Not my ideal but the cameras aren't costing us anything so I suppose things balance out.

Thanks...Jeffro
