JVC GY-HD200 With the redrock Micro

I am considering the JVC GY-HD200ub since theres a good sale on one & Its a much better Camera then my Sony HVR-V1U & a friend compared the JVC closer to the Sony PMW-EX3 except he mentioned how front heavy the EX3 is & how it gets to him carrying it around on shoots. He looked at the JVC GY-HD200 & said its better balanced & has a great lens. Has lots of features & for the money, he's thinkiing about selling his EX3 to get this JVC as well.

What I would like to know is how it works with the Redrock Micro. I own the M2 & wanted to know if anyone else is using this Camera with the redrock. Does anyone have any good advice?

Thanks,
Thomas

The strength of that camera is also its weakness when it comes to adapter. Without saying anything about image quality (since I haven't used one), I can tell you that actually getting the M2 to fit on the camera is going to be a challenged. The shoulder-mounted form and the long stock lens means that you're going to end up with a very long and front heavy rig that's going to be very difficult to balance or go handheld with. The M2 in particular is probably the bulkiest out of all the adapters on there and it's definitely going to be a challenge to adjust the rod system such that the adapter still fits.

I cant remember my password for the redrock site to ask questions right now but I was wondering about that.

So your saying the camera is a good camera, just the redrock set up is going to be a huge issue attaching it? I was also looking at the Panasonic HVX200a. Either way I need a better camera the the Sony HVR-V1U. I was going to go today to B&H to get something. Just trying to figure out what I can do based on a camera that works better in low light. I know the HVX isn't much different in low light then my V1U & I shoot allot of events in halls & the lighting is always an issue. The JVC Ive heard handles light waaaay better so Ive been looking at this camera because of this. What do you think?

Hi,

While strictly not an M2, I recently replaced my DIY spinner's GG with a redrock Groundglass, so you may say that the footage is technically a redrock M2 look.

I have been using this setup in the most adverse shooting situations, including shooting with it handheld while suspended by cables on a zipline 122 meters over a gorge 500 meters across.

Also you can see i mounted it on my DIY jib;

Hope this will show you the possibilities with this camera.

Nice!

I need to build one of those. I've got no shortage of plans that I've accumulated for building one - not that figuring out the basic design is very difficult, I just need to get off my butt and build it.

How much would you say you spent on the materials?

Not much, It actually grew through time! I originally built it for the DVX, it went only 9 feet up. Then extended it to go up to 14 feet. I then reinforced the tubes with undersized tubing to form a double wall to hold my HD100. After acquiring the HD200 and attaching a DIY spinning adapter to it I installed a post for cable suspension for added strength since the added weight started to bend it.

The tripod is an old manfrotto, and so is the head you see in the photo. The key is a strong base post. the part that holds the crane arm and attaches to the tripod.

Welp just got back from B&H emptyhanded. Turns out I need to have the HDV tape function because some of my clients pay me to shoot & hand them the tapes. It only shoots at 720 onto standard Def tapes so the cam is not functional for me. I looked at the Canon XL-H1 3-CCD but it doesnt have the 24p aspect. Only 24f, which I guess can be similar but I dont want to do anything in post production, I just want to shoot in something like 24p if I need to.

UHG, its like 1 cam shoots with P2 cards, standard def tapes, 1 shoots with 1080i but with out 24p, 1 shoots both but doesnt do tapes, its like its impossible to get what u want in 1 camera with out spending your life savings or face divorce, lol!

Anyone got suggestions, hows the Canon XL-H1 3-CCD do with this 24F mode?

24F is identical to 24p in all respects and there is no special step in post production to accomodate it. I've been using it for years. In someways it's superior because 24F records native 24 fps without any pulldown, unlike most other tape based system like the V1U.

The HD200 does shoot HDV onto tape. It records the transport stream of m2ts. Is it 1080 you are looking for?
