Just picked up ARRI Kit

Hi folks,

I just picked up an ARRI kit (650/300/150) and I'm particularly impressed with the robustness of the gear. I'm expecting a Chimera softbox and speedring for the 650, but I was offered the custom ARRI softbox & speedring for the 650. The ARRI softbox is almost $300 more expensive than the Chimera, but I think the speedring is adjustable to fit the 300(?)

Has anyone used the ARRI softbox gear by any chance?

Congratulation it's a great basic kit. I have the same kit with the Chimera and the speedring as is, only works with the 650.

Congrats, where did you buy it from and how much/?

I'm almost positive that someone else makes the softbox for arri. In the States, Chimera's come with an Arri softbank kit. Go chimera, why pay more for the same thing REBRANDED for ARRI.

congratuation Newt on your light kit...........I wanna get a light kit too but I don't where to get one and not sure which kit.........maybe you can pass me some infro

Thanks for the replies, guys. Filmat11, interesting about the rebranding. I like Chimera gear, and I'm guessing that will be the direction I go in.

To the Australians looking for a supplier, I got the gear directly from ARRI Australia, but I can't give you a price as it was negotiated in with other arrangements. They are more than competitive compared with on-sellers of their gear and their lighting manager is an ex-gaffer with 30 years experience who is great to deal with.

I am also sourcing a custom roadcase supplier for single lights and gear that does not have a standard hard case (unsual sizes which cannot be provided by Pelican or Storm, etc and at a cheaper price). If anyone from Aus or NZ (or anywhere else I guess) wants me to keep them posted, let me know here and I will oblige.

Yia, are you in Australia? I know quite a few suppliers here, but depends what light gear you are after. Some of the forum lighting threads here regarding which kits or lights for diff purposes will help you narrow your choice down....if you have some specifics I'm sure myself and other users would like to help if we can.

Now that you have your new kit, here's what I would throw in there to have handy... I'm not a big fan of amvona.com products, but they do have fairly nice C-stands. But the reason I bring them up, is that they have a very short light stand, aprox height of 14" inches max, that works great for placing an Arri just off the floor. Matthews, maker of pro gear, makes a similiar stand called a "premi" or baby premi". Excellent stand, I have a couple, but the amvona stand will fit in the arri kit case. Get a couple of extra scissor clips, a couple of Mafor clamps(Bogen super clamps) a Cardellini or Mathellini clamp-see Matthews -www.msegrip.com, an extra bag of C-47's ( clothes pins) and a couple of dimmers. These should all still fit in your Arri kit. I can list another 50 items, but this will get your started. I would also keep a set of extra bulbs on hand as well at all times. Diffusion, color correction gells and some other wild colors added, are always nice to have on hand, but I have so many, they don't fit in my case anymore. Enjoy your new toys...

ive always received chimera stuff with my arri kits, so i'd imagine your getting the same softbox. If theyre charging a lot more for the "arri" version then forget it. Chimera stuff will last.

I'd also recommend a baby/junior wall plate for mounting your lights low to the ground. It works similar to a high hat; a flat plate with an adjustable 5/8" pin. Theyre cheap too.

Thanks for all the comments guys. I got the softbox from Chimera + speedring and it is very nice. I like the 1/4, 1/2 and full diffusion front panels supplied, as well as the baffle. I'd never seen a softbox with 1/4 and 1/2 front diffusion panels before, so I'm chuffed.
