Just Ordered a Rode NTG-2 ?

Well after months of indecision and procrastnation I finally decided to buy the Rode NTG-2. I wrestled with holding out for the AT4073 but in the end I decided that when I upgrade it will be to the higher end mics not another low/mid level mic. I listened to countless audio files and read many user reviews on this and other sites before making the plunge. I would have ordered from EVS had they had Rodes mics listed on their website.

I await delivery and will post some sample clips after I get the mic. This has to be one of the toughest calls for a low/no budget filmmaker to deal with. Hopefully if I ever shoot a feature I can locate a sound man with some Neumanns or Sankens. Price was a definate priority but the combination of price/performance was the final factor. We shall see in the coming days if I made the right choice.

By purchasing this mic for 249.00 plus 12.00 to get it sent 2nd day air I have saved some money for a boom(any recommendations?) a UV filter and maybe even a mini 35 or new tripod. A wide angle lens or lighting kit are other possibles. I didn't know when I decided to buy the Dvx that I would want so many other accessories or I would have searched for a used one with some of this stuff already. Thanks to all whose comments and experiences aided my decision. If it doesnt do the job Ill kill you #$%@#$#s LOL !

Seriously thanks to this great forum and its members for all the grabs, soundbites and comments on this and many other topics.

Not a bad way to go... You can always use the Rode as a wireless 2nd mic in the future in combo with your fancy new one when you get it.

I recommend the VDB booms, many others would recommend Gitzo. Panamic is also brilliant.

Thanks for the tips. I haven't decided on a boom yet I do have a couple of 12ft fishing rods....na I'll spring for a boompole.

If you work in fast moving production types (like news or run n gun or reality or similar), try and go for an internally cabled boom too... it saves a cr@p load of time, and you never have to get "twisty cable syndrome". But make sure you order the boom pre cabled: I once bought one and tried to cable it myself. Big mistake. Ended up costing a lot more than if Id order it straight, and I dont think it worked exactly how the manufacturers intended it to, used to jam occasionally and stuff.

If you work in very static mediums, (formal interview maybe), then also get a high quality mic stand - they're ridiculously cheap for what they do... Or rig up a fishing rod holder type thing to fit a c-stand. That holds a boom nicely, and you can angle it with one hand!

Hope thats useful to you in some way.

I got my NTG-2 today! I mounted it on camera and shot some footage rear noise rejection wasn't too bad a car traveling down a gravel road 100ft behind me didn't get picked up at all. I did pick up a tv about five ft away in an ajacent room when I hot indoors but it was turned up very loud. The mike was hot which I liked very much but if I was shooting a sporting event I would want a mixer for some pad. My initial impressions are favorable.
