just got an HVX200! What's a good matte box?

Hysonfilms.com for sure! I just got mine on friday and i cant find my damn digital camera to do my review, but its an A+. I got the FF and the Matte Box combo to mount on my M2 Rail System and it totally kicks ass. The Mattebox also screws right onto the Stock lens for run and gun as well! The FF is super Smooth and totally legit!

The mattebox just rocks though, obviously an easy job is made to block the sun, but it looks bad ass, and is nice and big with fully adjustable top and side flags, also accepts 4x4 filters. 2 at a time. look for my review very soon, just need to find the damned camera. :P

i do have this one screen i took with my Macbook Pro though

Hi Cynic

That's a lot of stuff on that 503, are you going to attach a Marshall as well?

curious - Have you used a bunch of other ff before the Hyson, and can you compare it in quality to others? thanks.

havnt personally used any other ones, but spent about a month reading reviews, looking at pics, and TONS OF OTHER stuff.

The FF is really solid, really smooth, and totally rugged, it came with 1 hard stop on it as well as a writable surface for marking your own.

After all considerations, i mean even if price wasnt a concern and i was a millioniare, i still wouldnt like to be ripped off. Hes selling the Hyson matte box HD, and the FF together for cheaper than half of some Matte boxes alone!!! See the combo on his page,

Hysonfilms.com

And if you have special circumstances, then just let him know, hes a human, not a robot like a few of the places ive tried to contact and answer my questions. Thats why i went with him as well, but for 450 for the combo he selling and a few more for an extra rod brace, it is an unbeatable deal.

I dont have a marshall in the budget as of yet, but i might get one in the future. The 503 head is holding up quite well, the sticks are as sturdy as can be so im not worried about those. The Marshall might put it over the limit on the 503, but for right now its perfect, ive got an AT mic coming in which wont be too much more, and after that, its just the marshall that is left.

Only thing I hesitate about the Hyson (which is a great price point and looks sturdy enuf) is that I thought the filters don't rotate. I dunno, I'd like to have a rotation option, for polarizer and gradient filters, eh? I was checking out Formatt, but they dont have side flags, and theyre pricing over $200 to near 300, and that's right where Cinetactics is.

Indie Snap is nice for those pinched hard by the dollar for an HVX, but its problem is that it doesnt fold. And it reaches into the microphone window as well, even with a mounted one. But the filters can be rotated. They have 2 different ones, a DV (more NTSC shape) and an HD (widescreen type). I wouldn't want to shoot run/gun with it, the Matteblox seems more forgivable for impact brushes. And there are a standard flag and an oversize. It folds well, you don't worry about dents on metal, since its rigid cloth-type. But that Hyson looks very promising for production, I just wish they had an option for filter rotation!

Question about the hyson mattebox: is the top brow adjustable? How much does it weigh?

Very Light, not sure exact weight, 8 oz maybe? It can be supported by the stock lens no problem, it mounts directly like the lens hood that comes with the HVX200.

The top flag can fold down and up and also is adjustable on the sides with its size to make it smaller or bigger, the same goes with the side flags, then fold in and out and can become taller or shorter.

Hi frontpage,
have you had a look to www.geardear.com ? It has a rotating stage, if you need, and an option for 4x5.65".
Mine is a "large" ready-to-use set with three stages, one rotating, one vertical 4x4" and one 4x5.65", very lightweight and well thought out.
In this forum it is a bit too much talk about the Hyson one for me, as if there are no other good or even better solutions. I think, the Geardear.com is more flexible and versatile... and is on the market now and not only projected...

Just checked out geardear site and product definitely looks interesting for very little money. I do question, however, whether it is wise to use a clip on mattebox with the HVX, particularly when his rod system seems so inexpensive. I would definitely like more info about this. Marc, do you have any pics of your set up that you can post?

Me too. Anyone else on the site have one or know anything about this product. It looks interesting off the website but they don't have a shop set up at the moment so I guess you have to email or...?

Thanks.

Hi NSoltz, Hi Peter,
I think you have to email them, they are really nice guys. I met them at a trade show in Munich and ordered there. I think, they have no online shop yet, because the customers have so many questions and there are so many cameras, they have to answer so many questions and have to email always anyway. It´s because they have a new modular concept which needs to be explained to everybody. At the trade show I could compare it with Chrosziel, Cavision and Vocas. To me they were more expensive than Geardear and not so useful at all. And especially the Vocas guys were very interested and looked many times at every detail of the mattebox...
So I decided to go with the Geardear. I like the material, it´s so lightweight but strong, you can´t break it.
I don´t have pictures yet, but I will try... ;-)
My set up looks like the picture they had on a poster there and on their website www.geardear.com/alle.html , without the cage and the monitor. But I will get the monitor with the TVshade soon.
Hope this helps
Marc
