Looks great on the desk.. makes it much easier to control volume now too. It actually got rid of the hum I was getting out of my studio monitors. Will report how it functions for my next project.
I set up my Makie board on the left as I am a right handed mouse user. That allows me to to adjust it with my free hand . . . just a consideration, unless your a leftie!
After 25 yrs. experience in live sound I find Mackie mixers to be the cleanest! However everybody seems to be copying Mackie technology nowadays and most of the mixers out there today are pretty clean sounding! Personally, If you are primarily into video I would strongly advise getting one that can use batteries in the field!
Question though... I'm hooked everything up and playing back MP3s fairly loud, i barely peak -15 on the on the UV... shouldn't i hover around 0? So am I not getting a high enough signal into the mixer? The level for the input from my Soundcard is already at max. Thanks
appears as though you're barely getting a signal at that level [-15]. Yes you should be hovering around 0. How are you coming into the board, balanced or unbalanced input? There should [might] be 2 quarter inch female inputs, one for each, .........There's a big difference in gain! Have you tried the other input?
Well the thing is.. my monitors are DAMN loud even when the meter's barely peaking -15. Here is how I've got everything hooked up.
Audiophile 2496(unbalanced RCA) -> Mixer RCA Input(Channel 7/8 ).
Mixer Output(unbalanced Phono) -> Active Studio Monitors.
I'm getting a -10dBv signal out of my soundcard.
I've tried to set 7/8's level to max and the stereo out level doesn't even need to be turned up much at all to get tremendous volume level albeit low UV level. I have no idea what's going on. Thanks
I think that THE most common audio problems are not due to actual equipment, although, of course, some is better than others, but due to a lack of understanding of "gain structure". I've set up many audio systems for folks in various situations and that has been my experience.
Proper gain structure in any audio system, no matter how simple, will make almost anything sound at least "ok". There is a pretty good tutorial on that at: http://www.mmproductions.co.uk/gain1.html
Check it out and see if it helps. Rane also has a pretty good tutorial on lots of different audio gear and set ups. Procurring a compressor unit (good and inexpensive is the Alesis 3630) is probably the next most valuable thing to getting your mixer. Learning to set up a compressor is a bit tricky at first but more than worth the effort. I won't record anything anymore, especially for video, without one.
Hey, you have the same Wacom tablet that I do. What a coikidink. It's an oldy but a goody. I am also using my mixer audio (via usb out, I have an Event EZ bus). That thing had a huge learning curve, especially with peaking levels. My advice, just play with it a lot and soon you'll get the hang of it.
Well, I'm not real surprised... those are some big-*ss monitors to be sitting so close to. At proper levels, they should be unbearably loud in that configuration.
But you need to mention where you're getting your VU readings... are these readings for the input signal or the output signal? If your input signal is that low, the problem's before the mixer. If it's just the output signal, your monitors are too big for where you're sittin' ;-) and you just need to keep the level low.
Unless you're using your mixer output for anything but monitoring, the output VU level doesn't matter as long as you're comfortable.

The white knobs at the bottom are volume faders. Ha what good would a mixer be without a level fader? The fader is inherient in the definition of a mixer.
I have to give a shameless plug for my studio and my mixer :
what i meant was a main volume fader like on the mackie's...thanks for clearing things up...love your set up by the way. 8) i have the same desk...looks like i'll be going to guitar center...
