I recently sat in on a demo of a large multi-touch monitor, and was surprised at the precision and response time of the thing. As one who frequently ends my day with sore shoulders from hunching over an edit desk, I had to wonder....has anyone tried editing video on one of these things?

whats funny about computing these days is that studies have been telling us for years to not sit too close to your screens. well, that's not exactly an option with touch screens now is it? if i recall, an arms length away was a rule of thumb. imagine trying to use a touchscreen from exactly at the end of your reach :)

There have been times when I've wanted to do editing by touchscreen. There have been times when I've drooled over it. But I suspect, in the end, it would be exhausting. Probably also frustrating as you learn the ropes and accidentally touch all sorts of things. :)

I will certainly try it, though.

For some reason, my finger isn't as sharp as the end of my mouse, so I fear I'd end up not being able to cut as accurately simply because I'd be blocking the edit with my fingers / hands !

I think someone will invent the touch desktop. Your large horizontal desktop will be a touch screen. The key is that the angle of view will be directed to where your eyes are instead of straight up. Maybe a surrounding armrests to keep your arms off the screen. Maybe it would be tilted like a drafting desk.

I've been waiting for someone to do that. There's no reason why you can't create a film cutting like tactile front end to something like FC or Premiere. Heck you don't even need to run the editing software on an ipad, you could just use the ipad as a control surface and let another computer connected via bluetooth or wifi do all the heavy processing...

I've got access to those, good for drawing, but the pen would make it clunky for an NLE.

Edit: actually, I just noticed the high end model is both pen and touch, that might work.

I joke sometimes that, with the failing eyesight of my age, my monitors have to be so large that I loose my mouse pointer on the screen..... Granted, I am not THAT old, but my visual acuity is not what it was 20 years ago, and the bigger monitors are appreciated. The real problem with big monitors is that I have to drag things further. I don't notice it at all during the day, but I sometimes wake up in the middle of the night with my shoulders on fire, which is probably not a good sign.
I am concerned about the 'finger size' issue as well. It seems like it would fun to try, but not worth the expense if the experiment failed.....

I designed a touch system for editing about five years ago, but the technology wasn't there for it yet, nor did I have the funds to develop it. I'm hoping to do something with my design soon

try a wacom. Working with the pen is just the best. and if you map it to your screen you always know where your pointer is.
