OTHER: Just about to purchase the PX270, some doubts.

Hi, I actually have a HVX200 and I want to improve purchasing a PX270.

I want to know if the improvement is really worthy to be totally convinced. I´m very interested in themes like performing in low light, the noise and the overall image quality improvement.

- I have read in some reviews that the quality is better in LongG50 than in AVC-Intra 100, I don´t know how this can happen but is really depressing and a reason to think about the purchase.

- Another question to think is the workflow. Anyone knows if you can edit LongG codecs with Premiere Pro?

The thing is than my goal is the PX270 because the HVX200 gave me a great result for a lot of years and I can use the P2 cards and the batteries that already I have, but I can´t avoid to think about reviewing other cameras, maybe the new Sony XDCam. What do you think?

The 270 is worlds better in all aspects compared to the 200/200A, except power consumption. The 270 goes through batteries much faster than the 200.

As for the quality being better in LongG50 than in AVC-Intra 100, what does that have to do with comparing the two cameras? The bottom line is the camera is the limiting factor where the 270 is concerned as the recording codecs are far better than the camera can "perform", especially with AVC Intra 200 enabled. I don't really understand the point of AVC Intra 200 when AVC Intra 100 is probably beyond the point of any gains in the image recorded in this state of the art 1/3" chip camera.

(Maybe somebody can explain that to me!)

I don't know if LongG codecs work with Premiere Pro, but they do work now with FCP X.

The 270 is designed more to be used with microP2 as there is only one "full size" P2 slot, partly to accommodate people moving up from the previous generation of Panasonic cameras. (So, no spanning of clips from microP2 to full size P2.)

I'm sure the new XDCam that is in a similar price point to the 270 is a very fine camera. It is probably just a choice of what you are used to using. My choice is clear in the small sensor cameras.
 
CSagan, what is most important to you to improve upon? Resolution, color accuracy, displays etc...

As gkantziper stated, the PX270 is a camera to end the 1080p era with. It does everything very well. The proxy recording has been a great tool for me. Having 6mbps files ready to upload right from the card is very useful. The image, noise/sensitivity and usage are just great. Now that the IS and recording modes have been addressed I think these are about the best you could hope for in a 1/3" chip. I wish it had 720p120 though...:)
 
Thank you both for your answers, now I realize I was going to purchase the 270 anyway, I just needed a little push.

I think that the versatility of codecs is pretty great. I have done a lot of works with the HVX200 where I had to record 6-7 hours and the client wanted 1080, so I had to ask some friends and rent a lot of cards. And later I had to spend a lot of hours transfering the cards and doing back up. Now with the 270, if LongG50 and LongG25 is so good as I have read it is, these kind of jobs are much more easy and comfortable to fullfill.

I have a couple more questions:

- In addition of the originals, which batteries give a good, durable and reliable performance? Some friend recomended me the brand SWIT, but I´m open to listen about others.

- Which wide angle adapter is good for the PX270? I have a Century one for the 200 and is ok, the thing is these two cameras have different lens diameter.

- I also would like to buy a remote for zoom, but I need a really smooth one that let me do some very slow and smooth zooms.

I do not think a WA adapter is needed since the lens is very wide already.

Ok, I just received today the camera. Almost everything is great, just one thing disturbs me: there isn´t DVCPRO HD 25P.

It´s my fault that I didn´t know this, but I didn´t think that to have 25p in the older format of the camera was going to be a issue. By the way, is Panasonic going to put DVCPRO HD 25P in the next firmware updates? I hope yes is the answer...
 
I can't understand why this would be an issue? There is a 25mbps codec which produces much better images and is full raster. I would not expect DVCPro to be put in the camera.
 
Hi, the issue is that I´m freelance and sometimes I work with companies where the standard is DVCPRO HD 25P and other times we do multicamera shows recording everycamera in this format.

Another thing is that DVCPRO HD is pretty much easy for workflow with some clients because they can see the files. If I give them LongG50 or even AVCIntra they could go crazy to see it!!
 
I see. Well, then you are in a tough position. No modern camera will be using this codec so you will have to have older cameras to interface with the clients or get them to move forward in time. Most if not all NLE's will be able to see all of the codecs in the PX270.
 
I stand corrected. You are right, it is in the brochure. I hope they update it for you soon as it took a long time to get the other codecs completed.
 
I don't know if you found this but DVCPRO is listed as a codec when the camera is in 720p60 and 1080i mode. I would guess by seeing all that was added the camera is "finished" from a development standpoint. There is an emphasis on 60p and 24p with 30p & 25p being left out save a few options. So I am not hopeful for your DVCPRO 25p setting.

Mmmmm... it´s ok, I just did my first job with the camera yesterday and it´s amazing the image quality. I hope in a short period of time everyone will start using the new codecs and forget about DVCPROHD.

The thing is that here in my country (Spain) is hard to evolve in the workflow. I work for TV companies that use only the 250 and always record in DVCPROHD because that´s the way they do since a lot of years ago.
 
It really depends upon what they can accept and edit along side their DVCPRO footage. Maybe give them a bunch of different clips using separate codecs and see what works best. They are going to like the image quality so maybe you can find a way forward using a different codec.
