judging acceptable media size

Can anybody tell me if there is a rule of thumb concerning importing minimal media size for acceptable resolution; if the clips are not enlarged more than 100% on the timeline? For example, though usual dimensions are 720x480, what about using imported historic stock that's 320x240?

Should I infer from the silence following this question, means that one shouln't import anything that isn't 720x480 in NTSC, period? This is for a doc film project I'm editing. Anyone?

It depends on the quality/resolution of the original. If it's good enough, or damaged enough, you can blow it up a good bit. You'll have to just drop it in and try it. But everything has it's own limits to enlarging.
