Johnny Storm look

I'm looking for a solution to create a look such as the Johnny Storm character from the Fantastic Four movies.

Specifically, I'd like to maintain the features of a characters face while they are on fire.

I've masked out the face and adjusted the expansion and feathering, but when the flames get in the mask area it looks odd as there are flames dancing around (and through) the mask. The mask sticks out like a sore thumb.

I thought if I could make the face like Johnny Storm, then I could maintain the features of the face (and see the lips move with dialogue) without relying on cutting a hole in the flames (a mask around the face).

What's the most effective means of changing the face to look like this?

Thanks for the help.

Not an easy task.

For the flames I would use several masks and a good particle plug in (particular).

Thou it will be a lot of handwork left.

Here is a quick and dirty example with After Effects onboard tools.

I used Colorama for the color (use the Fire preset and tweak from there) plus a bit of turbulence for the heat wave effect.

Nice job Frank. That's exactly the look I'm hoping for.

Just for clarification, I've got flame elements that I've composited onto the body. Looks good except in order for the face to be seen I've placed a mask over it and adjusted the opacity in that area.

As I mentioned in the first post, it doesn't look right to me. I thought I'd try to make the head much like you've done in your photo.

I'll give it a try.

Actually you should first do a negative and then apply hue to get yellow colour and then have fun with gamma and RGB color correction.Increase R half and G to 1/4 ,decrease Blue to 1/4

the way they did if in FF was to use a 3d model that was animated to match the actors movements then they used a mix of particles and fluid effects on the model and comped that fire in shake and nuke, its a little more complex, and at times they used life action fire, comped in as well, the shot where he was skiing for example,

because the flames are 3d they were able to control placement, they sis also use roto shaped(masks), and other texturing effects, however this was done by a team of well trained compositors, tds and effects artists. I'm not 100% sure but the flames in this image look very houdini-ish

Well i dont think there was much 3D on his scenes cause you can check yourself applying negative map to scenes with him and besides its really not THAT complicated fx and one person could do it without much problem ,it would just take little longer.
Anyway cast were terrible for this series and i hope last one was really LAST ONE.
Guys from costumes did better job than guys from CGI.Black Silver surfer was looking really nice.Best superhero movie was Iron-Man so far.But maybe its because i really didnt read iron man comic boooks and i read hulks or spider-mans instead so i expected something more from the movies and i was disappointed.
