I don't get it. He was wiretapping to get them to be in his movies?
Pelicano was a "private detective" often used by the rich and powerful (and often famous) to coerce people for various business and personal goals. Messy divorces, messy business deals, tangled lawsuits, in other words, deals gone bad. He was the "muscle" for many of Hollywood's biggest names to get things "done." I think his primary tactics were "scary" phone calls, threats, and blackmail.

Knowledge is a powerful thing. If he knows who the players are and what cards they are holding he can win the game.

Well, I just read that McTiernan entered a guilty plea Monday as part of a plea agreement. The agreement was sealed and no one is talking about it, so we'll have to July 31st when he gets sentenced to find out what happens. I'll be suprised if he gets jail time, but I highly doubt it if they came to a plea agreement this fast.
