John Carter of Mars

I don't think there was a big enough audience to spend $250M on it. A lot of sci-fi and comics have gone mainstream, but ERB is still the stuff of introverted 8th graders. Magnificent though the stories may be, that's where it still lives.

My wife fell asleep. I don't really blame her. If I didn't know the source material, I might have, too.

I don't think this means "Mars" is box office poison, though.

From Boxoffice Mojo, John Carter did about $282M (domestic+worldwide) on a $250M budget, and "Total Recall"(2012) did $178M on a $125M budget...

So, not 'poison'... but probably not that inspiring for future settings...

I believe the new Total Recall didn't go to Mars.

If you can name an actually GOOD movie centered around Mars that bombed, then you might be able to conclude that Mars is poison. More likely it's just because the movies weren't good. That's not Mars's fault.

I don't think any normal people believe Mars is box office poison...but film executives are a panicky, superstitious, unimaginative species who look for ANY reason not to green light something. So don't count on seeing anything Mars related on screen anytime soon unless James Cameron decides to be the first person to shoot a movie on another planet.
